Motivation by Numbers
by Peter Murphy
Want a quick and easy way to beat that feeling of lethargy
that stops you from getting things done?
Here's what to do in three easy steps...
1. Decide you are ready to beat the apathy that is holding
you back.
Sometimes we claim we want to change when we are really just
making small talk, it takes a little more effort than that
to move from apathy to enduring self-motivation.
Until you get serious about breaking out of a rut it is all
too easy to keep on doing the same old thing. Once you
decide you have had enough you then have sufficient momentum
for a breakthrough to lasting motivation.
2. Translate your goal into numbers
Any large or complex goal can become overwhelming when we
fail to break it down into small highly measurable component
parts. The secret is to take back control by structuring the
goal as a sequence of specific tasks.
The best way to do this is to work with numbers because it
is then impossible to fail as long as we take it one step at
a time. We can easily see what needs to be done, what we
have already achieved and what remains to be done.
For example, writing an important report might be expressed
in terms of condensing 20 pages of notes, writing 6,000
words, analyzing 5 new trends or discussing 7 key issues.
3 View the entire project on one sheet of paper
when you can see all the elements of the project at once
you will be crystal clear about what needs to be done. And
as you complete each step and tick off each mini success you
will find the resulting momentum keeps you on track.
As you measure and track your results it soon becomes a game
to beat your personal best. And that's when work becomes
play!
Remember, whatever you measure you can improve! Motivation
by numbers is a sure fire way to stay motivated until you
achieve a goal as well as a fun way to track progress and
keep improving.
Quit making it so hard to get things done. Translate all
those goals that make you feel apathetic into a game to beat
the numbers. How quickly can you get 5 done? How well can
you do the first 3?
You get the idea. Now, go and turn that task you are
procrastinating on into numbers!
