About this product: now that they're not together anymore, noothgrush put out a cd, so we don't have to buy twenty different 7"es. this album highlights most of the tracks they ever recorded, leaving out only five or six. a few songs are on here twice in different versions. if you're into sludge, this is the band to listen to. nice political overtones too.
About this product: The first time I saw the Vanishing live, I was really impressed. It was nice to see some real alternative music - something genuinely strange. The first E.P. was good - dark & dancable in a sort of early 80's, proto-Siouxsie sort of way, but with a little edginess about it. Then came the first album, S.F.P.C., which included songs from the original EP but rerecorded with higher production values + some new material. The first album seemed to lack the hypnotic chaos of their live shows. This new album has them back on track: spooky, tense atmosphere & tight lurking rhythms. It's great to hear them move away from anything radio friendly to really capture more of the hypnotic tension of their live sets - with all the rough edges. If you like the Faint, Interpol + Joy Division, early Siouxsie & the Banshees and Fad Gadget, this deserves space in your collection!
About this product: Not having known very much at all about Chopin, I cannot vouch for the accuracy in the Naxos entry in their CD and cassette Biography series; but I can vouch for the enjoyment (NA 421912) afforded me.
Written and produced by Jeremy Siepmann, this audio-bio not only tells the strange story of Chopin's life but also includes generous examples of his music, drawn from the bottomless pit of Naxos musical CDs. An excellent idea was to use actors for the voices of Chopin (Anton Lesser), George Sand and other females in his life (Elaine Claxton and Karen Archer), and other male acquaintances (Neville Jason). It is the kind of reading that would fascinate even if the work were fictional.
His letters are particularly fascinating, especially as they are read dramatically by the small cast; and one would rather hear about all his faults--physical and psychological--from people who knew him well. Perhaps his strange epistolary relationship with his Titus is dwelt upon a bit too much, but such are the times (then and now).
My only criticism in a negative direction is the length of the musical examples. I do not really think the entire "Revolutionary Etude" had to be played or the entire "Funeral March"; a minute or two with a fadeout would have been fine, especially on repeated hearings where one wants the facts. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

About this product: Comic Party Revolution (2005) continues the misadventures of the would-be manga artists from the 2001 broadcast series Comic Party. Somehow, all the high school comic fans have gotten into college, but it would be a mistake to say they've grown up. Taishi still dreams of ruling the world through doujinshi (fan comics), Eimi brags about her supposed accomplishments, Aya hasn't developed any confidence, and Mizuki has become less patient and more aggressive. Aspiring artist Kazuki remains the sanest member of the cast, although that's not saying much. The show has shifted from a spoof of doujinshi subculture to an unfocused harem comedy--the girls aren't all in love with Kazuki, although he remains at the center of the story. Fans of Comic Party will glad to see the familiar characters again, but they'll miss the inside jokes that made the original so much fun. (Rated TV 14, suitable for ages 12 and older: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon
A searing portrait of a country in disarray, and of the man at its helm, from âthe bravest of journalistsâ (The New York Times)
Hailed as âa lone voice crying out in a moral wildernessâ (New Statesman), Anna Politkovskaya made her name with her fearless reporting on the war in Chechnya. Now she turns her steely gaze on the multiple threats to Russian stability, among them President Putin himself.
Putinâs Russia depicts a far-reaching state of decay. Politkovskaya describes an army in which soldiers die from malnutrition, parents must pay bribes to recover their dead sonsâ bodies, and conscripts are even hired out as slaves. She exposes rampant corruption in business, government, and the judiciary, where everything from store permits to bus routes to court appointments is for sale. And she offers a scathing condemnation of the ongoing war in Chechnya, where kidnappings, extrajudicial killings, rape, and torture are begetting terrorism rather than fighting it.
Sounding an urgent alarm, Putinâs Russia is both a gripping portrayal of a country in crisis and the testament of a great and intrepid reporter.
