About this product: PERSIAN COOKING: A TABLE OF EXOTIC DELIGHTS is collection of 322 authentic recipes from the world's oldest cuisine. Clear and concise instructions make the dishes turn out exactly as they are supposed to.
Persian cooking is based on lamb, fruits, vegetables and grains, used in subtle and varied combinations. The food is neither highly spiced nor hot but seasoned with herbs. It is very nutritious. Many of the dishes are suitable for vegetarians and in many others, meat may be easily omitted. The dishes can be made from ingredients found in almost any market. A guide to speciality stores where hard-to-find ingredients, which are used in a few dishes, can be found is also included.
Rice preparation, which has often been observed defines the quality of the Persian chef, is covered in detail.
Half Persian and half English, Nesta Ramazani has lived in both countries, making her uniquely qualified to offer these recipes. During a one year return visit to Iran she picked the brains of both professional chef and housewife. She also consulted Rosa Montazemi's classical Persian language cookbook, Honar-e Ashpazi. Back in America, she tested and tried out the hundreds of dishes and rendered the recipes to exact American measurements and timing.
The author observes: "Here is a culinary art so highly developed that the most lowly vegetable can taste divine, every meal can be a gastronomic treat, every cook a creative artist."
Mrs. Ramazani also includes a historical and cultural introduction to the food of Persia. The background of many of the dishes are also explained through engaging anecdotes.
Included are: 322 recipes from all regions of Iran: soups, ashes, stews (khoresht and khorak), dolmehs, boranis, vegetables, salads, rice dishes (pollos and chelos), kababs, breads (nan), sweets, desserts, sharbats and pickles (torshis). Photographs of prepared dishes. A short dictionary of Persian culinary terms. A guide to grocery stores outside of Iran where hard-to-find ingredients may be obtained. A historical and cultural guide to Persian cuisine.

Poetry is the greatest literary form of ancient Persia and modern Iran, and the 14th-century poet known as Hafiz is its preeminent master. This collection is derived from Hafiz's Divan (collected poems), a classic of Sufism. This 19th-century translation by historian Gertrude Bell remains widely acclaimed by scholars and readers.
About this product: Persian cuisine is healthy yet colorful like a Persian miniature, exotic yet simple like a poem by Omar Khayyam. It combines rice, the jewel and foundation of Persian cooking, with a little meat, fowl or fish; plenty of vegetables, fruit, nuts, herbs, and a delicate mix of spices such as rose petals, angelica seeds, dried limes, candied orange peels, cinnamon, cardamom, cumin and saffron to achieve a balanced diet that is uniquely Persian. Najmieh Batmanglij presents 95 exquisite recipes that are low in fat yet high in flavor. From her years in the South of France and the United States, the author has brought about a marriage of ancient Persian cooking, modern French Provencal food presentation, and contemporary American eating styles. The result is a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. The recipes have been kitchen tested by both American and Persian chefs. They are intelligently written and easy to follow, one per page, each facing a magnificent photograph.
Beginning in the sixth century BCE, Persian kings ruled a vast, culturally diverse empire that stretched from northern Libya to central Asia. The regime and its rich multicultural traditions prospered for 250 years until its invasion, and eventual defeat, by Alexander the Great's army in 331 BCE. Yet until the British Museum's exhibition in the summer of 2005, the Persian perspective of this landmark event in world history will have been largely neglected. In one of the few accounts available, The Persian Empire provides a comprehensive and accessible portrayal of one of the world's first land-based dynastic kingdom.
In her cultural and political history of the development of this power, Lindsay Allen-whose posts in the Ancient Near East departments of the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art make her one of the leading authorities on Persia-surveys written sources, art objects, warfare, politics, archaeological sites, and daily life during Persian rule. She traces the evolution of the monarchy, showing how it fostered unprecedented international communication and cultural exchange, and describes how the Persian expedition into Greece in the early fifth century BCE became a defining moment that established a European identity apart from an Asian one. Throughout, lavish illustrations bring to life the traditions of this ancient Middle Eastern civilization and finally place Alexander's invasion within a Persian context. As the subject experiences renewed interest, The Persian Empire promises to be the definitive work on one of the most powerful dynasties in ancient history.
About this product: As the 25th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution approached, Abbas Milani realized that very little, if any, attention had been given to the entire prerevolutionary generation. Political upheavals and a tradition of neglecting the history of past regimes have resulted in a cultural memory loss, erasing the contributions of a generation of individuals. Eminent Persians seeks to rectify that loss. Milani's groundbreaking portrait of modern Iran reveals the country's rich history through the lives of the men and women who forged it. Consisting of 150 profiles of the most important innovators in Iran between World War II and the Islamic Revolution, the book includes politicians, entrepreneurs, poets, artists, and thinkers who brought Iran into the modern era with brilliant success and sometimes terrible consequences. The biographies and essays weave a richly textured tapestry of lives, ideas, and events that reveals the true story of these decades in the life of a nation.
The two volumes are divided into sections on politics, economics, and culture, each accompanied by an introductory essay that places the individual stories in their broader historical context. Drawn from interviews, extensive archival material, and private correspondence, Eminent Persians is a treasure trove of original documents, many appearing in print for the first time. Detailed sketches of personalities and personal foibles offer a compelling and highly readable account of this remarkable period of history on a human scale.

About this product: This is a really nice little book, I was poking through it the other day. The description is lacking in one important detail however: this is designed for small children who are native speakers of Farsi, so that they can learn to read and write their mother tongue. If this is what you're looking for it's a fun little book.
Ibex Books, the source of this book is a wonderful little publisher and is well worth browsing their other tiles as well, in both English and Farsi. They also make some nice Bi-Lingual volumes.
