BOOK
Police: Streetcorner Politicians
William Ker Muir Jr.
$10.00

About this product:

"This book . . . examines the problem of police corruption . . . in such a way that the stereotype of the crude, greedy cop who is basically a grown-up delinquent, if not an out-and-out robber, yields to portraits of particular men, often of earnest good will and even more than ordinary compassion, contending with an enormously demanding and challenging job."—Robert Coles, New Yorker

"Other social scientists have observed policemen on patrol, or have interviewed them systematically. Professor Muir has brought the two together, and, because of the philosophical depth he brings to his commentaries, he has lifted the sociology of the police on to a new level. He has both observed the men and talked with them at length about their personal lives, their conceptions of society and of the place of criminals within it. His ambition is to define the good policeman and to explain his development, but his achievement is to illuminate the philosophical and occupational maturation of patrol officers in 'Laconia' (a pseudonym) . . . . His discussions of [the policemen's] moral development are threaded through with analytically suggestive formulations that bespeak a wisdom very rarely encountered in reports of sociological research."—Michael Banton, Times Literary Supplement
BOOK
The natural superiority of Southern politicians: A revisionist history
David Leon Chandler
$75.00

About this product:
I read this book years ago, keep a copy for reference, and buy copies for friends. For anyone who believes that Southern politicians started and continue with Strom Thurmond or consisted of the progeny and colleagues of George Wallace, then you should read this book. Unfortunately, you will then be forced to revisit your ill-conceived notions of the South and its leadership from the founding of the Country. Therein lies the key to why this book is an excellent source. What most books lack is the ability to give you a great appreciation for the political dynamics of the founding of this country; what motivated the individuals who fled persecution in search of a new start only to confront those same forces here in this country. Mr. Chandler places you in the place and time, so that you can see how the Southern politician was able to develop a style that allowed for the achievement of his goal, while passing on the more obvious, yet less important victories to his opponents from the North. With this template, he takes the reader through the progeny of these early politicians and provides an enlightening and unfortunately previously untold story of some of the most brilliant leaders the country has ever known, which leaves the only difficult part of the book - regardless of political skill, the agendas of certain of these geniuses are less than impressive; however, if you can enjoy a study of political tactics, this is a great book!

BOOK
Bureaucrats and Politicians in Western Democracies (Peabody Museum)
Bert Rockman
$28.49

About this product:

In uneasy partnership at the helm of the modern state stand elected party politicians and professional bureaucrats. This book is the first comprehensive comparison of these two powerful elites. In seven countries--the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, and the Netherlands--researchers questioned 700 bureaucrats and 6OO politicians in an effort to understand how their aims, attitudes, and ambitions differ within cultural settings.

One of the authors' most significant findings is that the worlds of these two elites overlap much more in the United States than in Europe. But throughout the West bureaucrats and politicians each wear special blinders and each have special virtues. In a well-ordered polity, the authors conclude, politicians articulate society's dreams and bureaucrats bring them gingerly to earth.

BOOK
Richard Milhous Nixon: The Rise of an American Politician
Roger Morris
$16.00

About this product:
Weighing in at over 1,000 pages, Richard Milhous Nixon: The Rise of an American Politician is undoubtedly the most detailed single volume on the political career of the disgraced ex-president. But the events in this book take place decades before the Watergate scandal, in an era when many were unsure whether Nixon might ever climb to heights of power from which to topple. After covering the first 33 years of Nixon's life in about 300 pages, Roger Morris immerses the reader in the major controversies of Nixon's time on Capitol Hill: the Alger Hiss case, the hotly contested California Senate race against Democrat incumbent Helen Douglas, and the charges of improper conduct that rocked the 1952 presidential campaign and motivated a desperate Nixon to make an appeal to the American public on live television (the speech is perhaps best remembered for his invocation of the family dog, Checkers). Morris takes Nixon to his 1953 inauguration, leaving the reader in no doubt of what it cost Nixon, the Republican Party, and America to make that moment happen. --Ron Hogan
