From the supplier: The Asian financial crisis that began in Thailand and affected other countries in the region during second half 1997 led to deep recessions in the region that resulted in rising unemployment, poverty and social dislocation. The nature of this financial crisis and its persistence belied some basic assumptions, since the nations most adversely effected were so-called 'tiger economies' that had few of the weaknesses typically associated with market economies that turn to the International Monetary Fund for help. The crisis appears to bottomed out but it holds a number of important lessons. For instance, the main contributing factor to the turbulence was the existence of essentially flawed financial systems due to poor financial supervision and regulation and even poorer risk management.
