BOOK
Animal Snoops: The Wondrous World of Wildlife Spies
Peter Christie
$6.69

About this product:

Meet the furry and fishy detectives of the wild.

You might not imagine that animals can be highly sophisticated spies and snoops, yet nature is filled with them. Scientists are discovering that creatures -- from bugs to baboons -- are experts at watching, listening and prying into the lives of other animals. This fascinating book investigates how animals use secret-agent skills to find a mate, locate food and outsmart predators.

Young readers can discover how clever male baboons intercept mating calls to sneak a secret rendezvous with a female and how whales use other whales' echolocation to zero in on a tasty snack. They'll also learn why knife fish use electricity to cloak themselves from predators and how sneaky gray squirrels build fake stashes of food to doublecross eavesdropping birds. Whether it's a rattlesnake ambush or a canary cage match, the stakes in wild spy games are always high.

With colorful illustrations and photos throughout, this book is an entertaining peek into the diverse undercover world of animal spies.

Book Extract

Why a rap book?

I have always been inspired by music and rap has always been one of my favourite genre's. When I first heard NWA in 1988 I started to love rap. I liked the testerone pumped music and the wordplay and also the powerful messages you can convey in raps just as you can in stories.

The creativity and word play made me write one or two raps straight away and always made me interested in the music. I wrote a lot of poems/raps in 1992 when I was seventeen. A couple of thousand actually but through them all away when I was manic.

BOOK
Katherine Bernhardt: The Magnificent Excess of Snoop Dogg
Katherine Bernhardt
$16.94

About this product:
Katherine Bernhardt's The Magnificent Excess of Snoop Dogg is a lush and punchy artist's book. Jerry Saltz has called Bernhardt's style "a hybrid of funk, punk, pop and every kind of Expressionism, be it abstract, neo-, German or East Village. She paints things I'm often suspicious of or have seen too many times before: fashion models, consumer goods and pop stars...Yet Bernhardt's work--for all its flaws--sends me." In this volume, Bernhardt juxtaposes her fashion model and celebrity paintings with the media images she uses for source material. A scrappily painted portrait of an anorexic looking, large-headed Kate Moss shares a spread with its source photograph--so we can see that Bernhardt has indeed captured its essence faithfully. Also included are a photo-tour of Bernhardt's studio, candid snapshots and revealing essays by critic and curator Nick Stillman and painter Lisa Ruyter.

Snoops in the City
Darlene Gardner
$0.10

About this product:
In Florida, twenty-five years old Tori Whitley knows it is time for her to become independent as her brother the architect and her sister the pediatrician have been. However, when you have no skills and are used to depending on others it is hard to obtain a decent job. However, her cousin Eddie Sassenbury down in Boca Raton offers her work as his assistant in his private sleuthing business that has many clients. Tori rationalized that if that loser Eddie can succeed she should easily be able to perform undercover work.

Eddie assigns his apprentice to tail Seahaven businessman Grady Palmer to determine what kind of person he is. She immediately thinks her mark has a cute butt, but is mortified when Grady realizes she is tailing him. Instead of being angry or trying to slip away, Grady invites her to accompany him. As they travel together, they fall in love, but Tori worries because the customer may always be right, but no one will hurt her Grady, not even her.

This amusing romantic romp is reminiscent of the 1930s screwball comedies. Tori is a terrific protagonist struggling to prove she can be a professional sleuth vs. her growing love for Grady, who is a nice person. The support cast including a feline adds dementia to a wild southern Florida tale.
