The Yahoo! Stores have grown into one of the largest online shopping destinations on the Web today. The nearly 20,000 Yahoo! Stores have a 71% reach among online consumers, the highest on the Web. Many of these stores have become so successful that they have grown from small 'mom and pop' or part time businesses into full time money-making ventures. A whole new set of skills and knowledge are needed to operate a Yahoo Store like a full time eCommerce business.
Succeeding At Your Yahoo! Business teaches you how to customize a Yahoo! Store using the basic elements of the popular web design program Dreamweaver, including architecting an eCommerce web site. It then takes three different types of Yahoo! Stores and deconstructs them, showing you how they are formed and how they sell the products or services they offer. There is also an entire section on how to position a Yahoo! Store, acquire customers, and retain those customers. Finally, the book will show you how to set up the necessary accounting and operations systems, and how to hire the staff necessary to successfully run your business.
About this product: Microsoft Popfly is a web site comprising a social network (the Popfly Space), a tool (the Popfly Creator), and an optional Visual Studio plug-in (the Popfly Explorer), which together allow you to create and combine web content for sharing with others. This book introduces Popfly and shows how you can use it to: Create web content mashups by connecting predefined building blocks on a design surface; no programming required. Create a Popfly hosted web page incorporating one or more mashups. Include mashups in your social network profiles, as sidebar gadgets on your Windows Vista desktop, and more. Make Popfly friends, share content with them, and rate their projects. Use Popfly Explorer to share Visual Studio projects and make them accessible from anywhere. And just for fun: the book concludes with an example of how Microsoft Popfly may be combined with another mashup technology, Yahoo! Pipes, to create even more innovative web content.
About this product: From YAHOO! The number one portal on the internet, with over 75 million users, comes the first mass-market edition of its ultimate guide to the best sites on the web - newly updated for today's web browsers. For any student, retiree, researcher or web browser looking for a specific subject on the web this is the only book they will ever need. It will never go out of date because it is linked to YAHOO - the web's most authoritative source! It's not a tech book. It's an easy to understand book that teaches the average computer user how to use the web effectively and then saves hours and hours of useless web searching by giving the best sites, complete with screen sbots and an easy to understand set of symbols that classify the web sites content.
About this product: You can do just about anything on Yahoo!--the site that started out as a popular Web subject tree, and has morphed into a center for doing everything from finding a job to finding a date. How to Do Everything with Yahoo! documents the site's capabilities as they were in the third quarter of 2000. Essentially, author Alan Neibauer talks about Yahoo! as if it were a powerful application, and not a Web site. This is an appropriate approach (on Yahoo's part, as well as Neibauer's). Even if you use the site all of the time, this book likely will introduce you to cool things that you can do with--or that you never knew existed on--the popular portal.
The book begins at the registration process that gets you a free Web-based e-mail account. Calendar management, maps, auctions, travel, and the rest of the services that your registration gives you access to--including the surfer-friendly subject tree that made Yahoo! famous in the first place--are covered next. You'll find lots of references to other sites, too. One potential flaw lies in the explicit procedures that advise the reader to "choose this, click that"--they aren't well suited to Web services like Yahoo!, and too often they become obsolete without notice, anyway. --David Wall

Yahoo! as a tool for finding information and communicating online
About this product: "How I wish someone had told me these things before I started a Yahoo store," writes Cari Haus, entrepreneur and author of this timely, strategy-packed book. With massive layoffs continuing around the country, many are considering how to start a business of their own. With more than 35,000 stores usings its interface, Yahoo is the most popular e-commerce platform today. Author Cari Haus, while making a compelling case for why to choose the Yahoo platform, also details many mistakes that could only be learned in the "School of Hard Knocks." Cari's successful online log furniture store, Log Cabin Rustics, with its impressive sales growth, should be an inspiration to all netpreneurs. While weaving in stories of her own Yahoo store journey, Cari gives a no-holds-bar account of the things she has learned with regard to Yahoo store set-up, search engine marketing (SEO), tips, and things to watch out for. While not a complete step-by-step guide, this book is a good read that anyone with a basic understanding of e-commerce could appreciate and learn from. While she refrains from labeling the companies that let her down, Cari is quick to recommend Yahoo store developers and consultants who get it done right. Her resource page at the end of the book is a great starting point for finding a competent Yahoo store developer that does what they say they will do, in a competent manner and at a reasonable price! This is a must-read for anyone contemplating the set-up of a Yahoo e-commerce store.
About this product: Web directories come in handy when you want to discover new Web resources without actively searching for a particular keyword on a search engine or subject tree. Yahoo! The Ultimate Desk Reference to the Web applies editorial judgment to the billions of Web sites out there, yielding a nicely annotated list that spans dozens of subject areas. Health, government, sports, news--it's all here. One really nice feature: the book lies flat at almost any page, enabling you to station the volume at your side as you use both hands on your keyboard. Having said that, you would expect a directory published under the Yahoo! brand to have a supporting Web site that would obviate the need to do manual URL entry. No such luck.
At certain points, it's evident that the contents of a Web site just don't translate well onto paper: "Sound Effects has, of course, numerous belches, as well as the requisite boings, bells, and bangs." Right. But, anyway, this book is worthwhile reading for days of idle surfing. It'll make your everyday Web experience certainly more enjoyable. --David Wall
Topics covered: A directory of Web sites, organized by subject area and then alphabetically. Subject areas include art, computers, entertainment, news, science, shopping, and sports.
