BOOK
The American Democrat: The Social and Civic Relations of the United States of America
James Cooper
$29.95

About this product:
Liberty, like equality, is a word that is more often used than understood. Perfect and absolute liberty is as incompatible with the existence of society, as equality of condition. It is impracticable even in a state of nature, since without the protection of the law, the strong would oppress and enslave the weak. Liberty is merely a state of the social compact that permits the members of a community to lay no more restraints on themselves than are required by their real necessities, and obvious interests. To this definition may be added, that it is a requisite of liberty, that the body of a nation should retain the power to modify its institutions, as circumstances shall require. These and other topics are explored in James Fenimore Cooper's "The American Democrat". Cooper argues that the natural disposition of all people is to be able to enjoy perfect freedom of action. It is a common error to suppose that the nation which possesses the mildest laws, or laws that impose the least personal, restraints is the freest. This is indefensible because the power that concedes this freedom of action, can recall it unless it is lodged in the body of the American community itself. Cooper was a fierce democrat and a harsh cultural critic - much like Alexis de Tocqueville. This large print edition will resonate to the issues of this time almost as much as it did when originally published.

BOOK
Twilight of the Texas Democrats: The 1978 Governor's Race (Centennial Series of the Association of Former Students, Texas A&M University)
Kenneth Bridges
$27.00

About this product:
In 1978, Republican William P. Clements won the race for governor of the Lone Star State, marking the start of an interlude of two-party competition in the state. Eventually, Republican ascendancy would once again make Texas a "safe" place for a single party--but not the party that had dominated the state since the end of Reconstruction.

At the time, observers asked whether the election of a Republican governor was a mere flash in the pan. For the previous twenty years, other races, at every level from national to local, had made inroads into Democratic strongholds, but that party's dominance by and large had held. In 1978, the situation changed.

Now, historian Kenneth Bridges--drawing on polling data, newspaper reports, archival sources, and extensive interviews--both confirms the significance of the election and explains the many and complex forces at work in it. He analyzes a wide range of factors that includes the disaffection among Mexican American voters fanned by La Raza Unida, miscalculations by Democrat John Hill and his campaign staff, the superior polling techniques used by Clements, the unpopularity of the Democratic president, Jimmy Carter, the changing demographics of the state, and the unprecedented spending by the Clements team. In the process, Bridges describes not an ideological realignment among Texas voters, but a partisan one.

Twilight of the Texas Democrats illuminates our understanding of both political science and regional history.

BOOK
Legacy of the Prophet: Despots, Democrats, and the New Politics of Islam
Anthony Shadid
$3.00

About this product:
Offers a controversial argument that the main currents of political Islam, despite recent world events, are rejecting militancy for the sake of democratic politics - a shift of historical importance.

Now available in paperback, Legacy of the Prophet is a sweeping, first-person account of the transformation in the style and message of Islamic politics at the beginning of the twenty-first century. As terrorism floods our headlines, this book offers a rare but much-needed counterpoint: it shows that Islamic activists have increasingly renounced violence in order to form political parties, engage in grass-roots work, and enter into civil society to bring about peaceful reform in their authoritarian societies. Drawing on his years of reporting in more than a dozen countries of the Muslim world, Anthony Shadid charts the way in which the adolescence of yesterday's Islamic militants is yielding to the maturity of today's activists. Through personal interviews and extensive travel, he chronicles that new generation, which is finding a more realistic and potentially more successful future through democratic politics. Complete with a new introduction, Legacy of the Prophet promises to redefine the debate over the future of political Islam.

BOOK
Napoleon Bonaparte Broward: Florida's Fighting Democrat (A Florida Sand Dollar Book)
Samuel Proctor
$3.20

About this product:
There are very few stars in the Florida political galaxy. There are many reasons for this. A lot of voters who live in Florida are not from Florida and the Sunshine State is very large and spread out. People in Miami have no idea who the political leaders in Jacksonville are. It is very tough for a politician to be able to remain popular in Florida for too long.

This solid biography by Samuel Proctor looks at one of the few exceptions in Florida's history. Napoleon B. Broward was colorful and controversial, a progressive Democrat who took on the remnants of the old Bourbon Democrats and the Flagler machine. Proctor offers a readable narrative of Broward's early years growing up in Jacksonville and his career working the tug boats on the St. Johns River. Broward would gain some fame as sheriff of Duval County when he would lead the fight against gambling in Jacksonville. Broward also worked as a filibuster, helping run guns and supplies to Cuban rebels. Broward won a close race to be governor and worked to drain the Everglades and reform higher education in Florida, placing the state university in Gainesville as opposed to Lake City. Despite failed bids for the US Senate and the Democratic nod for VP in 1908, Broward would be elected to the US Senate in 1910 but die before taking office at the age of 53.

The book is dated and Proctor is not the most dispassionate of scholars. This can often annoy. For example, Broward's support of the Florida divorce bill for grounds of insanity, specifically for Flagler to get a divorce, is glossed over and, for that matter, so is most of Broward's term in the state legislature. Proctor also cares a lot more for elections than actual governance. Despite these flaws, the book is very useful with a solid narrative and Proctor is able to take the reader through the often Byzantine factionalism of Florida politics of the 1890s and 1900s. One can see why Broward is one of the few giant figures in Florida political history in this very good biography. Any one looking to understand an important figure and era in Florida politics would do well to read this book.

BOOK
Democrats for Life: Pro-Life Politics and the Silenced Majority
Kristen Day
$6.62

About this product:
Day demonstrates how the Democratic Party has been hijacked by the extremely liberal members of the party and special interest groups such as NARAL. She illustrates that only 25% of people in America support the party’s agenda of “abortion on demand,” and that this superliberal approach to abortion has driven away voters because of this issue. This book is also important for Republicans to read, giving a powerful new perspective and potential ally in Congress. Many pro-life measures in Congress could not have been passed if it hadn’t been for pro-life Democrats, simply because the Republicans did not have enough votes. The Democratic Party’s suppression of its pro-life members is a serious issue for all pro-life people, Democrat or Republican.

BOOK
Democrats and Republicans - Rhetoric and Reality: Comparing the Voters in Statistics and Anecdotes
Joseph Fried
$33.95

About this product:
Who are the real voters? Drawing on authoritative nationwide surveys and a wide range of quips and quotes, the author outlines the profiles of the average Republican and Democrat, and details their lifestyles, ethics, intelligence, and achievements in a multitude of charts and statistics.
A recognized whistleblower who identified $2BN in false Social Security claims, the author pokes fun while poking holes in our prejudices about both national parties. This work is intended as an informative, fair, and constructive book that can broaden your understanding of Democrats and Republicans. Also, notes the author, it will come in handy if you just need some ammo for that next encounter with your brother-in-law.

Are Democrats more tolerant than Republicans? Are they more educated? Who spends more time at work and who spends more time watching TV? Why are Republicans happier? Who really benefits the most from Social Security? All of these questions, and many, many more, are answered in the new book, Democrats and Republicans Rhetoric and Reality. Comparing the conduct and achievements of the Democratic and Republican constituencies, it is sure to be controversial.

The book contains many surprising findings. For example, Democrats and Republicans have different tendencies with regard to trust, self-esteem, apparent intelligence, political knowledge, mental health, happiness, work hours, and charity. These general differences are quantifiable and statistically significant.

Although the book is aimed at the popular market, it has all of the supporting references and statistical significance of an academic work. Interspersed among the findings are quotations from pundits, politicians, philosophers, celebrities, fruitcakes, etc. Although some of this rhetoric is strident, the book's overall tone is objective a refreshing alternative to the bombastic polemics we often see in modern political works. The last chapter comprises several constructive lessons that can be learned from the various Democratic-Republican comparisons.
This may be the most comprehensive and authoritative work written about the constituencies of our two major political parties, and is must reading for anyone who is interested in American politics.

BOOK
From Democrats to Kings: The Brutal Dawn of a New World from the Downfall of Athens to the Rise of Alexander the Great
Michael Scott
$18.23

About this product:
Athens, 404 BC. The Democratic city-state has been ravaged by a long and bloody war with neighbouring Sparta. The search for scapegoats begins and Athens, liberty's beacon in the ancient world, turns its sword on its own way of life. Civil war and much bloodshed ensue. Defining moments of Greek history, culture, politics, religion and identity are debated ferociously in Athenian board rooms, back streets and battlefields. By 323 BC, less than 100 years later, Athens and the rest of Greece, not to mention a large part of the known world, has come under the control of an absolute monarch, a master of self-publicity and a model for despots for millennia to come: 'megas alexandros', Alexander the Great. Michael Scott, Finley Fellow in Ancient History at Darwin College, Cambridge, explores the dramatic and little-known story of how the ancient world was turned on its head from Democratic Athens to King Alexander the Great in this superb example of popular history writing. "From Democrats to Kings" also gives us a fresh take on the similar challenges we face today in the 21st century - a world in which many democracies - old and new - fight for survival, in which war-time and peace-time have become indistinguishable and in which the severity of the economic crisis is only matched by a crisis in our own sense of self.

BOOK
After Hitler, Before Stalin: Catholics, Communists, and Democrats in Slovakia, 1945-1948 (Pitt Russian East European)
James Ramon Felak
$33.95

About this product:

After Hitler, Before Stalin examines the crucial postwar period in Slovakia, following Nazi occupation and ending with the Communist coup of February1948. Centering his work around the major political role of the Catholic Church and its leaders, James Ramon Felak offers a fascinating study of the interrelationship of Slovak Catholics, Democrats, and Communists. He provides an in-depth examination of Communist policies toward Catholics and their strategies to court Catholic voters, and he chronicles the variety of political stances Catholics maintained during Slovakia's political turmoil.

Felak opens by providing a background on pre-war and wartime Slovak politics, notably the rise of Slovak Catholic nationalism and Slovakia's alignment with Nazi Germany during World War II. He then describes the union formed in the famed “April Agreement” of 1946 between the Democratic Party and Catholics that guaranteed a landslide victory for the Democrats and insured a position for Catholics in the new regime. Felak views other major political events of the period, including: the 1947 Czechoslovak war crimes trial of Father Jozef Tiso; education policy; the treatment of the Hungarian minority; the trumped-up “anti-state conspiracy” movement led by police in the Fall of 1947; and the subsequent Communist putsch.

Through extensive research in Slovak national archives, including those of the Democratic and Communist parties, After Hitler, Before Stalin assembles a comprehensive study of the predominant political forces and events of this tumultuous period and the complex motivations behind them.
