About this product: Product Description In this book, authors Rich Shupe and Zevan Rosser share the knowledge they've gained from their years as multimedia developers/designers and teachers. Learning ActionScript 3.0 gives you a solid foundation in the language of Flash and demonstrates how you can use it for practical, everyday projects. The authors do more than just give you a collection of sample scripts. Written for those of you new to ActionScript 3.0, the book describes how ActionScript and Flash work, giving you a clear look into essential topics such as logic, event handling, displaying content, migrating legacy projects to ActionScript 3.0, classes, and much more. You will learn important techniques through hands-on exercises, and then build on those skills as chapters progress. ActionScript 3.0 represents a significant change for many Flash users, and a steeper learning curve for the uninitiated. This book will help guide you through a variety of scripting scenarios. Rather than relying heavily on prior knowledge of object-oriented programming (OOP), topics are explained in focused examples that originate in the timeline, with optional companion classes for those already comfortable with their use. As chapters progress, the book introduces more and more OOP techniques, allowing you to choose which scripting approach you prefer. Learning ActionScript 3.0 reveals: New ways to harness the power and performance of AS3 Common mistakes that people make with the language Essential coverage of text, sound, video, XML, drawing with code, and more Migration issues from AS1 and AS2 to AS3 Simultaneous development of procedural and object-oriented techniques Tips that go beyond simple script collections, including how toapproach a project and which resources can help you along the way The companion web site contains material for all the exercises in the book, as well as short quizzes to make sure you're up to speed with key concepts. ActionScript 3.0 is a different animal from previous versions, and Learning ActionScript 3.0 teaches everything that web designers, GUI-based Flash developers, and those new to ActionScript need to start using the language.
Praise "The best ActionScript book ever written." -Lee Brimelow, Creator of The Flash Blog

A Letter from Ariane de Bonvoisin
How good are you at change? Big changes? Small changes? Professional changes? Personal changes? The fact is, everyone experiences change. It’s the one constant in life. Be it a job change, relationship change, health change, or changes in the world we live in, change is unavoidable. What change are you or someone you love dealing with? A first time mom, recently divorced, caring for a sick parent, adjusting to a new job, or a recent graduate?
Whatever change you're experiencing —whether unexpected or planned—the first few days and weeks are often the hardest, most emotional time. It is the time when we have the most questions, emotions, doubts and fears. It is also the time when we are most in need of direction, information, inspiration, and support. Thirty days is enough to get started in the right way, to begin to understand what makes change easier and most importantly, how to stay on the right track.
I’ve interviewed hundreds of people and seen a pattern in what helps someone get through change with less stress and anxiety. The things we do, say, and feel directly affect our reaction to change. Through these interviews, I’ve seen that it’s possible to become better at change, to embrace and look for the positive in the transitions that will inevitably arise. The First 30 Days includes real life stories of people who have lived through many types of change, along with clear action points (look for the Take Action sections in the book) that will help you move through the changes in your own life.
The First 30 Days is for all of us who have always wanted to make a change, but didn’t know how to start; for those who have tried over and over to initiate a change with little or no success; and for those who are overwhelmed by the changes that have come into their lives. The First 30 Days will not only kick start your life of change, but it will also help you reach your goals by keeping you focused, directed and inspired.
I believe anyone can change. I believe there is always something good that will come from change, even if you can't see it right now. I believe that when we stop resisting the changes we are going through and simply embrace them, we realize that life is on our side. We all have a part of ourselves that doesn’t change —and, when we find that part within us, whatever change we are going through becomes easier. The First 30 Days can show you how.

About this product: 30,000 YEARS OF ART: THE STORY OF HUMAN CREATIVITY ACROSS TIME AND SPACE is the follow-up to Phaidon's phenomenally successful THE ART BOOK. This is an accessible, fun and informative compendium of world art that offers a fresh perspective on the whole of art history, from 28,000 BC to the present day. It debunks art historical classifications and hierarchies by presenting 1,000 masterworks of art in simple chronological order, demonstrating what was being created all over the globe at the same time. Only here can you find the Venus de Milo next to a mural from the Mayan civilization, or Velazquez' Las Meninas next to a painting from the Chinese Ming Dynasty, an Indian jade wine cup, a ritual Nepalese plaque, a Korean portrait, and Vermeer's Milkmaid. Each work has been chosen for its unique place in the history of art, and as a representative example of the art of its culture. By juxtaposing works of art from different cultures throughout time, this is the first book to offer a balanced appraisal of world art history, revealing the huge diversity of and similarity between man's artistic achievements.
Each entry includes a full-page color image of the work and a concise descriptive text that sets the work in context, explaining its contribution to the development of art and the medium in which it was created. A comprehensive index, illustrated timelines, and a glossary of terms and movements make this book an invaluable reference tool and teaching resource.
About this product: In the second of the "Merlin Missions"--hardback additions to Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series--plucky heroes Jack and Annie must once again must travel back in time to rescue Camelot from looming danger.
One wonders why Merlin can't handle this sort of thing himself, but then of course we wouldn't get a chance to see Jack and Annie have another seat-of-the-pants adventure, getting mixed up with shape-shifting magic, armies of birds, a puzzling gem of power, and all sorts of other trouble. With the help of their old pal Teddy (Morgan le Fay's apprentice, last seen in dog form in four earlier Tree House stories), the two "Master Librarians and Magicians of Everyday Magic" must solve the mystery behind a castle full of ghosts and a menacing army of ravens. Not surprisingly, half the trouble comes in unraveling Merlin's riddles and helping Teddy use his rhyming magic correctly.
Osborne doesn't challenge readers overmuch (including the constant restatement of plot elements, perhaps worried that kids might otherwise forget or lose interest) and many parts of the story barely convince (like Teddy's "period" dialogue, e.g., "'Tis cool indeed"), but fans of the Magic Tree House will no doubt love another installment. (Ages 6 to 9) --Paul Hughes

About this product: The indispensable companion to The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle, featuring more than 200 recipes to help stop diabetes and reverse many of its effects.
With more than 200 vegetarian and vegan dishes, and an emphasis on “good carbs,” plus menus, helpful tips and advice, and full nutritional information, this cookbook will help people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes eat and live well. From breakfast dishes to desserts, every recipe has been created to be low glycemic, low fat (and trans-fat-free), low sodium, and cholesterol-free. Also included are: substitution charts to help readers make the transition to a plant-based diet, a glossary of cooking equipment, an appendix of cooking terms and techniques, and a list of uncommon ingredients with brand name recommendations.
About this product: So you've tried high-protein/low-carb diets, high-carb/low-protein diets, the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, and nothing seems to be working. The reason? According to clinical nutritionists Gene and Joyce Daoust, most diets are not balanced, not personalized, and not easy to follow.
To help put you on the track to successful weight loss (and maintenance), the Dousts, who worked with Dr. Barry Sears to develop and test the 40-30-30 Zone nutrition program, have written The Formula: A Personalized 40-30-30 Weight Loss Program. The Formula is based on the premise that if each meal or snack contains 40 percent of its total calories from carbohydrates, 30 percent from protein, and 30 percent from fat, your body will maintain the proper balance of insulin to glucagon and thus burn excess fat all the time--even while you sleep.
Sound complex? Don't worry. For those who care to know how to determine the caloric ratio of a meal, the science behind the diet is explained thoroughly. For the rest of us, however, the authors have done all the work ahead of time. The book includes a 21-day "Fat-Flush" diet plan with over 100 easy-to-prepare meal choices and recipes--including eggs and bacon, Chicken Caesar Salad, and vegetable lasagna--as well as the "Formula for Life" maintenance plan. And, since the program boasts personal nutrition, the "Meal Plan Selection" chart makes it easy to determine how much to eat based on your gender, weight, and activity level. Although slightly labor intensive (but try to find a diet that isn't), The Formula offers helpful tips and suggestions for sticking to the plan when you are traveling, out for dinner, or simply not able to prepare your meals ahead of time. --Bree Altman
