BOOK
Black Ops
W.E.B. Griffin
$13.45

About this product:
The Russian bear is stirring—and it’s hungry— in the #1 New York Times–bestselling series’ thrilling fifth novel.

The first disturbing reports reached Delta Force Lieutenant Colonel Charley Castillo in the form of backchannel messages concerning covert U.S. intelligence assets working for a variety of agencies suddenly gone missing and then, suddenly, inexplicably, found dying. Or dead. One in Budapest, Hungary. One in Kiev, Ukraine. One in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, mere klicks from the Iran border. And then one in Virginia, along the Potomac River, practically in the shadow of CIA headquarters.

Castillo finds the information both infuriating and fascinating, particularly after a recent experience with two CIA traitors whose own deaths were swift and suspicious. Despite there being some similarities, though, he thinks there’s something different with these new cases, something he can’t quite put his finger on. At first, it’s idle thought, but Castillo expects it’s only a matter of time before the commander in chief assigns him and his group of troubleshooters in the innocuously named Office of Organizational Analysis to look into the deaths while all those intel agencies fight among themselves trying to put the pieces together.

Meanwhile, Castillo has problems of his own—fallout from recent missions involving a clandestine rescue of a DEA agent from South American drug runners, and the confiscation of some fifty million dollars from thieves in the Iraqi oil-for-food scandal. He’s made more than a few enemies, he knows—both foreign and domestic. And then comes another back-channel message, this one delivered personally by his lethal friend, the Russian mobster arms dealer. All that has happened so far, he says, is just a warm-up for what’s about to come out of the Kremlin.

Could sabers be rattling for a new Cold War? Or worse? Presidential Agent C. G. Castillo is about to find out. . . .

Filled with Griffin’s trademark rich characters and cutting-edge drama, this is another exceptional novel in an exceptional series.

BOOK
Rough Weather
Robert B. Parker
$7.90

About this product:
A hurricane hinders a kidnapping and Spenser goes on a search for the man responsible— the infamous Gray Man, who has both helped and hunted Spenser in the past.

Heidi Bradshaw is wealthy, beautiful, and well connected —and she needs Spenser’s help. In a most unlikely request, Heidi, a notorious gold digger recently separated from her latest husband, recruits the Boston P.I. to accompany her to her private island, Tashtego. The reason? To attend her daughter’s wedding as a sort of stand-in husband and protector. Spenser consents, but only after it is established that his beloved Susan Silverman will also be in attendance.

It should be a straightforward job for Spenser: show up for appearances, have some drinks, and spend some quality time with Susan. But when Spenser’s old nemesis Rugar—the Gray Man—arrives, Spenser realizes that something is amiss. A storm, a kidnapping, and murder tear apart what should be a joyous occasion, and Rugar is seemingly at the center of it all. The only thing is that the sloppy kidnapping is not Rugar’s style—as Spenser knows from past encounters. With six dead bodies and more questions than he can process, Spenser begins a search for answers—and the Gray Man.

With its razor-sharp dialogue, crisply etched characters, and high-wire narrative tension, Rough Weather once again proves that “Robert B. Parker is a force of nature” (The Boston Globe).

BOOK
Junie B. Jones's Second Boxed Set Ever! (Books 5-8)
Barbara Park
$11.39

About this product:
I first met these Junie B. Jones books when tutoring elementary school students, They horrified me. When a book is presented to a child she assumes as she/he has every right to do, that these books are worthwhile. These books though, are filled with serious grammatical errors, poor punctuation, wrong spelling and slang. Sentence fragments abound in astonishing quantities, confusion in the correct use of parts of speech shows up repeatedly, mixing objects and subjects occurs again and again, and misspellings pop up. Stylistically also, the writing presents a poor example for young students to follow. A large proportion of the sentences commence with 'And', while the majority of paragraphs contain no more than one sentence each. The writing is choppy in a misguided effort to simplify the language, but the result of having sentence fragment after sentence fragment ends up confusing meaning. Do not use these books for children whose primary language is not English. Do not use them if you want your students of any origin to learn how to write well and read well-crafted prose. The presentation of a book to a child is a serious matter, for as you do it, the child assumes you are presenting something good, of which you and the school approve. They believe that they can safely emulate the kind of writing they read there. Excellent books throng in the market which commit none of the grammatical offenses of the Junie B. Jones books, and yet are funny and light-hearted, with delightful characters.Junie B. herself is depicted as an abusive young lady, happy to treat acquaintances and even friends and family with offensive dismissal and verbal abuse. She's never given any consequences for these behaviours. I personally do not like the example Junie B. sets, but it is the murder of the English tongue that I cannot bear. Books of this low standard are why neither Johnnie nor Junie can write.

BOOK
Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, Third Edition
Lester R. Brown
$10.00

About this product:
"How to build a more just world and save the planet....We should all heed Brown's advice."—Bill Clinton

In this updated edition of the landmark Plan B, Lester Brown outlines a survival strategy for our early twenty-first-century civilization. The world faces many environmental trends of disruption and decline, including rising temperatures and spreading water shortage. In addition to these looming threats, we face the peaking of oil, annual population growth of 70 million, a widening global economic divide, and a growing list of failing states. The scale and complexity of issues facing our fast-forward world have no precedent

With Plan A, business as usual, we have neglected these issues overly long. In Plan B 3.0, Lester R. Brown warns that the only effective response now is a World War II-type mobilization like that in the United States after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
