BOOK
Weird California
Mike Marinacci
$11.43

About this product:

THE WEIRD SERIES

What’s weird around here? That’s a question Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman have enjoyed asking for years—and their offbeat sense of curiosity led them to create the best-selling phenomenon, Weird N.J.  But why should they stop at New Jersey when there’s so much that’s peculiar, odd, and utterly nutty across the whole U.S.? So the two Marks—along with several other writers with a taste for the strange—have focused on some key locales, giving each of them the full “New Jersey” treatment. Spanning the breadth of the country, from New York to California, these are travel guides of a sort, but to the kind of places voyagers will never find on their everyday maps. Instead, they’re chock-full of local legends, crazy characters, cursed roads, and bizarre roadside attractions. So come along and join the fun: Some of what’s out there is disturbing, some hilarious, but all of it is unforgettably…weird.

Praise for WEIRD N.J.:

“They are the chroniclers of the creepy, bards of the bizarre…From abandoned asylums to colorful real-life characters past and present, to folk stories of ghosts, monsters, and aliens, Mr. Sceurman and Mr. Moran have created a journal of New Jersey’s unwritten history.”—The New York Times.

“Enough with the head-severing mobsters of Jersey. The state is packed with far more evil than TV could ever invent—from satanic Klan rallies to time-traveling tree farmers. And Weird N.J. has the pictures to prove it.”—Rolling Stone.

“Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran see their native state as others do not. For them, it is a demented Disneyland of worldly, and otherworldly, delights.”—The Boston Globe.

“If it’s the offbeat, paranormal or downright weird that you crave…there could be no better place”—USA Today.

Praise for Weird U.S.

Weird U.S. is delicious armchair reading. Who can resist an ax-wielding man in a bunny suit, a home shaped like a giant shoe, cannibal albino villages, midget colonies, passages to hell or close relations of Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster?”—San Francisco Chronicle.

Weird U.S. is a marvelous work of entertainment and the basis for a truly unique vacation.”—Library Journal.

“Kudos to Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman…This is the book by which future explorers will chart their road trips in pursuit of the meaning of this nation.”—New York Press.

As always, McPhee enlarges our understanding of the strange, making it familiar--and endlessly interesting.

BOOK
California: A History (Modern Library Chronicles)
Kevin Starr
$8.75

About this product:
California has always been our Shangri-la–the promised land of countless pilgrims in search of the American Dream. Now the Golden State’s premier historian, Kevin Starr, distills the entire sweep of California’s history into one splendid volume. From the age of exploration to the age of Arnold, this is the story of a place at once quintessentially American and utterly unique.

Arguing that America’s most populous state has always been blessed with both spectacular natural beauty and astonishing human diversity, Starr unfolds a rapid-fire epic of discovery, innovation, catastrophe, and triumph.

For generations, California’s native peoples basked in the abundance of a climate and topography eminently suited to human habitation. By the time the Spanish arrived in the early sixteenth century, there were scores of autonomous tribes were thriving in the region. Though conquest was rapid, nearly two centuries passed before Spain exerted control over upper California through the chain of missions that stand to this day.

The discovery of gold in January 1848 changed everything. With population increasing exponentially as get-rich-quick dreamers converged from all over the world, California reinvented itself overnight. Starr deftly traces the successive waves of innovation and calamity that have broken over the state since then–the incredible wealth of the Big Four railroad tycoons and the devastating San Francisco earthquake of 1906; the emergence of Hollywood as the world’s entertainment capital and of Silicon Valley as the center of high-tech research and development; the heroic irrigation and transportation projects that have altered the face of the region; the role of labor, both organized and migrant, in key industries from agriculture to aerospace.

Kevin Starr has devoted his career to the history of his beloved state, but he has never lost his sense of wonder over California’s sheer abundance and peerless variety. This one-volume distillation of a lifetime’s work gathers together everything that is most important, most fascinating, and most revealing about our greatest state.

BOOK
California Connection
Chunichi
$6.85

About this product:
CALIFORNIA CONNECTION is the lastest book by Chunichi. Although she is bringing a new book, she brings back a few characters from the GANGSTER GIRL SAGA. This tells the story of Jewel, some would call her a gold digger and others would just call her a get money chick, either way, money is her main focus. Touch, her childhood friend and drug dealer are as close as brother and sister.

When Calico arrives on the scene, there is an instant attraction between Jewel and Calico. Touch tries to warn Jewel that Calico has the reputation to use women to his advantage and toss them to the side when he is done with them. Will Jewel listen to his advice? Will it be too late? Or will she have a few tricks up her own sleeve and try to get revenge on Calico?

Although this was a fast paced read, I feel as if it was just an okay read. I guess I was expecting something more. For Chunichi to come harder since she was done with the GANGSTER GIRL SAGA, and I really didn't care for her bringing some of her old characters into the new book. All in all it was an okay read.
