Theremin - An Electronic Odyssey
$19.95

About this product:
Leon Theremin was the secret link between sci-fi films, the Beach Boys, and Carnegie Hall. His self-named electronic musical instrument--the first of its kind--took the world by storm in the 1920s and '30s. Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey, winner of Sundance's Filmmakers Trophy, explores the inventor's strange life and times, including his mysterious 50-year disappearance beginning in the 1940s. Interviews with theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore, synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog, and Theremin's contemporaries, as well as clips from movies such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, featuring the unworldly sounds of his creation, show an eccentric genius working toward success until his sudden vanishing in the Soviet Union. Footage of Theremin at 94 years old, finally rediscovered and rewarded for his achievements, brings a celebratory ending to what could be a grim or at least uncertain story, but instead is a fascinating documentary. --Rob Lightner

Electronic Lover/The Spy Who Came
$4.77

About this product:
Programmed to Love! A psychotic voyeur known as "Master" satisfies his overwhelming urge to peep by building himself an Electronic Lover - an elaborate computer-like machine that allows him to sit in front of a monitor while his oddball servant "Brother" sticks a remote camera into the windows of unsuspecting women. As Uta Erickson, Linda Boyce and other visions of pulchritude send the delirious Master into hallucinatory spasms, reality and illusion completely blur until he, like this film, goes tumbling off the deep end...

Plus: Join The Spy Who Came as vice cop Harry Harris (Warhol star Louis Waldon) falls into the clutches of an opium-addicted Arab and his "scientifically conditioned" female love slaves! (Think The Curious Dr. Humpp meets Olga's House of Shame.) Controlled by drugs, bondage, and an evil lesbian's brainwashing machine, the robot-like lovelies are all part of the Arab's bizarre blackmail scheme until horny Harry helps instigate an old fashioned love-slave rebellion!

Watch these surreal science-fiction sexploitation gems and you too will feel an overwhelming compulsion to make love... make love... make love...

DVD
Terminator Salvation (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]
$16.99

About this product:
Terminator Salvation restores some of the balance of huge freakin' explosions and emotionally compelling plot to the Terminator series. Set entirely after the nuclear assault that left the computer system Skynet in control of the world, Terminator Salvation follows John Connor (Christian Bale) as he grapples with both murderous robots and his superiors in the resistance, who aren’t sure they believe the prophecies that Connor is destined to save humanity. Into the midst of this struggle tumbles Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington, who would later star in James Cameron’s Avatar); the last thing he remembers was being executed in prison decades before. Baffled, he falls into company with Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin, Star Trek) and a mute little girl, who soon get captured--but Wright then meets and bonds with Blair Williams (Moon Bloodgood, Eight Below), a resistance fighter who remains loyal to the confused Wright even though Connor suspects he’s not what he seems--or what he believes himself to be. Terminator Salvation isn’t the astonishing synthesis of action and feeling that either The Terminator or T2 were; the plot threads are poorly woven and fray completely in the last third of the movie. Despite this, Terminator Salvation has at least two skillfully orchestrated action sequences that will get your heart racing, and Worthington’s beguiling mixture of toughness and vulnerability gives his relationship with Bloodgood a genuine pulse. It’s imperfect, but compared with the hollow carcasses that most action movies (including Terminator 3) turn out to be, it’s worth seeing. --Bret Fetzer

DVD
Hackers - Wizards of the Electronic Age
$14.95

About this product:
Hackers is a classic documentary about the midnight programmers that created the personal computer revolution.

Hackers is not about malicious code-crackers. It is about a "hacker ethic" that led to major breakthroughs in technology, and forever changed our world. From the first MIT hackers to popular Silicon Valley inventors, this program covers this fascinating cultural phenomenon through interviews with twelve of its early pioneers.

This half-hour program features conversations with: Steve Wozniak, designer of the Apple II; Andy Hertzfeld and Bill Atkinson, designers of the Macintosh; Homebrew Computer Club leader Lee Felsenstein; MIT hackers Richard Stallman and Richard Greenblatt; and many more.

Hackers was produced over a decade before the advent of the Internet. All interviews were shot over a long week-end in 1984, at the first Hackers Conference, hosted by Whole Earth Catalog editors Stewart Brand and Kevin Kelley, in Sausalito, California. This event was inspired by Steven Levy’s classic book Hackers – Heroes of the Computer Revolution.

Morton Subotnick: Volume 2, Electronic Works
$20.40

About this product:
Morton Subotnick - Volume 2: The Electronic Works 2

Multi-channel electronic works in Surround Sound
Morton Subotnick was a phenomenon in the late '60s, the first composer to write substantial works for synthesizer that had a wide audience. He has been mentor to generations of composers, and his influence is so pervasive that it would be impossible to trace completely - the electronica movement, for one, reveres him. This release brings together two of his classic analog electronic works which were previously only available on LP. The DVD allows you to experience these works "spatially" in your own home - in high-definition sound! SPECIAL FEATURES:

* 24-bit remastering from the original analog master tapes.

* Newly remixed for Surround Sound by the composer.

* Sidewinder is presented with a liquid light show created for the work by Tony Martin. Martin - infamous for his light shows in the '60s in San Francisco at the Fillmore West and New York's Electric Circus for bands like the Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds and the Grateful Dead - is a long-time collaborator with Subotnick.

* Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround encoding for the standard video side (playable on all DVD players).

* Dedicated DVD-Audio 5.1 Surround side.

* CD version contains the two electronic pieces in new dedicated stereo mixes by the composer.

* Liner notes by renowned electronic composer Curtis Roads. The DVD includes additional video:

* Subotnick and Tony Martin in conversation about their histories and collaborations (about 60 minutes).

* Subotnick speaks about his childhood through early years of composing (about 30 minutes).

* Documentary showing Tony Martin's process to create the liquid light show for Sidewinder.

DVD
Pioneers of Electronic Music, Vol. 1
$53.99

About this product:
I bought this documentary on a whim, and I thought it was pretty good. I did not know anything about Richie Hawtin and little about the Detroit Techno scene as well. I enjoyed how the film presented Richie through his growing up years and onto Plastikman and then onto the present, the interviews by his parents and friends, and learning about his diehard dedication and hard work to succeed no matter what. The documentary presents plenty of photos from Richie's past. Definitely check this one out!!
