BOOK
The Life of Helen Stephens: The Fulton Flash
Bob Broeg
$12.39

About this product:
A teenaged Helen Stephens stunned the crowd at the 1936 Berlin Olympics when she emerged from obscurity to run the 100 meters in 11.5 seconds, setting a world record that wouldn’t be beaten for twenty-four years. But her career and her notoriety didn’t peak there. She sued Look magazine for insinuating she was a man and won. She was the first woman to own and manage a basketball team and went on to actively participate in the sporting world as a coach, a mentor, and a senior competitor. At the time of her death in 1994 she had set the record for the longest athletic career in the world.

The Life of Helen Stephens: The Fulton Flash tracks the athlete’s rise from an awkward farm girl in Fulton, Missouri, to an international sports icon and record-breaking Olympic sprinter. Capturing the drama of Stephens’s personal saga as well as the development of the modern Olympic games, this compelling biography also calls attention to barriers female athletes overcame to participate in amateur and professional sports. Authorized biographer Sharon Kinney Hanson is the first person granted access to Stephens’s correspondence and diaries, including her account of her experiences as an eighteen-year-old in Nazi Germany during the Berlin Olympics, when her instant fame brought her face-to-face with Adolf Hitler.

Interviews with Stephens and her colleagues, coach, friends, and family members offer additional glimpses into the life of one of America’s pioneer athletes. As inspiring as her athletic accomplishments are, Stephens’s prevailing influence on athletics is even more notable. As a senior athlete, she participated in and encouraged other women to participate in the new athletic opportunities that were, in part, brought about by the women’s movement of the 1960s and 1970s as well as the implementation of Title IX in the 1970s and beyond. Depictions of the athlete’s family life and school years amid the sociopolitical climate of rural, post–World War I America are complemented by insights into Olympic boycotts, gender-testing of female athletes, the women’s movement, and gay rights.

The Life of Helen Stephens recounts her international career and the personal obstacles she overcame as a poor farm girl on scholarship to an upper-class private women’s college, as a female athlete in the male-dominated realm of athletics, and as a closeted lesbian in the worldwide spotlight. Through her spirited retelling of Stephens’s experiences, Hanson effectively showcases the pride Stephens inspired in Missourians and veritably points to the path she cleared for female athletes around the world. Down-to-earth, witty, and compassionate, Stephens loved history and the nuances of the English language, and Hanson’s homage is a fitting and superbly documented reflection of the life of a true American hero.

BOOK
Diving to a Flash of Gold
Martin Meylach
$26.30

About this product:
A non-fiction, first person narrative by Captain Martin Meylach and author Charles Whited of treasure hunting for the lost treasure fleets of the 1733 Spanish Armada and the wrecks of the galleons off the Florida Keys. Though the action takes place in the 1960's, it's a great book for those who want to appreciate more about the Keys than the usual tourist stuff. As a first time visitor to the Keys, I learned more about the history of the area than many of the local residents had knowledge of. (Probably why it's a "Florida Classics Library" selection.) It's exciting history to boot, and one that ran concurrently with the famous Mel Fisher of the Atocha fame (and who is mentioned often). In fact, it was at Mel Fisher museum in Key West that I saw a copy of this book as part of the exhibit. Plenty of references to locate the wrecks of the 1733 Spanish Armada, and some suggestions on a few artifacts still to be recovered, or so he says...Fun reading, great references!

BOOK
Networks in a Flash: Making Broadband Work for You
Thomas B. London
$14.93

About this product:
Networks in a Flash is a "how-to" guide that gives simple, straightforward, and tested recipes to network your home or office and connect it to the Internet quickly and securely. It shows how to create a network "out of the box" that is safe from Internet attacks and viruses, and that supports sharing printers and files.

The authors explain cable and DSL broadband access, and wired and wireless networks, and describe where wireless network components facilitate installation and support mobility. They give step-by-step instructions for the popular versions of the Windows operating system and readily available wired and wireless network components, and details showing how to share printers and files between computers.

Underlying each recipe and every example are simple principles to ensure that your network is secure from intrusions and attacks from Internet hackers. Networks in a Flash has a chapter that discusses securing a network and protecting against viruses, and one describing troubleshooting techniques, both invaluable to anyone using computers and networks. The book includes explanations of network and security concepts that educate but do not "get in the way" of setting up and running a typical home or office network.

Networks in a Flash includes complete and easy-to-follow guidelines to
Select a wired or wireless "network plan."
Itemize a purchase list of any needed network or wireless components, including a low-cost "gateway router" to provide security and sharing.
Set up for cable or DSL installation.
Install your network and configuring your computers.
Set up virus protection.
Configure your computers to share printers and files.
Troubleshoot installation and day-to-day issues.

Networks in a Flash is an easy to follow book for novices through experts that provides exactly the right amount of information and detail to manage the complexity of computers, software, and networks. This book is an excellent guide for networking with cable or DSL.
