About this product: I saw this film on video after having seen "Amistad" at the cinema. I am now buying it on DVD.
There are many parallels between the two but obvious differences as this feature blends the supernatural with a moving piece of fact based drama and makes use of interesting dramatic devices, such as present day colloquialisms and street talk to give the film its own distinct identity.
The story unfolds in the post civil war era, when slavery was outlawed in America and the trade in slaves abolished by much of Europe. In the year 1869 a group of slave merchants exploit the demand for cheap labour (implicitly to revive the war damaged Southern economy) by smuggling captured Africans to underground markets in the United States. En route to America the captives are visited by the voice of a wood spirit resident in the wood the ship was made from. It exhorts them to make good their escape while they are not too far from home. This is taken up by one of their number, Fyah who assumes leadership and initiates the struggle.
Eartha Kitt's mesmerising but authoritative tones are the "spirit of the wood" and Djimon Hounsou, featured in Spielberg's "Amistad" and Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" is this film's "Cinque" - Fyah. Both are memorable in a strong cast playing in relatively new theme to Hollywood, the struggle of the African against slavery. In this aspect it is more compelling than Spielberg's effort but still more could be done to capture the real African attitude to slavery and offer insight to the structure of the various African socities from which these captives came. Here Spielberg's film incorporated language, dance, slight flashbacks and other cultural idiosyncracies.
A good film for a look at post war American relations with Africa and its descendants which would make Amistad a complimentary "prequel".

About this product: As formulaic, utterly inoffensive romantic comedies go, Sweet Home Alabama could be better, and could be worse. It's a variant of Julia Roberts's Something to Talk About, with all the same strengths and weaknesses, and Reese Witherspoon is definitely its saving grace. As an Alabama country girl turned hot New York fashion designer, Witherspoon finds the genuine emotions hidden under a blandly familiar plot, making her character's romantic indecisiveness seem not only credible but disarmingly appealing. She's just agreed to marry the Camelot-bred son (Patrick Dempsey) of New York's no-nonsense mayor (Candice Bergen), but first she has to officially divorce the husband (Josh Lucas) she left behind years earlier... only to discover that their love is stronger than ever. The rest, of course, is a foregone conclusion, but with a sharp supporting cast and a few charming moments, Sweet Home Alabama will satisfy anyone who prefers safe, reassuring entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

About this product: Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) would like nothing better than to spend a quiet week's vacation in his suburban home, drinking beer and watching TV. But, spurred on by his two friends' spinning of boyish paranoid fantasies about their reclusive neighbors, the Klopeks, the usually down-to-earth Ray begins to suspect his idyllic neighborhood has been invaded by an evil force, to the point where he and his friends become psychotically nosey. You see where this is going, and you see it from a mile off. Only the general surface-thin plot is somewhat offset by director Joe Dante's fine sense of the absurd, and a host of engagingly played neighbor-types, namely Rick Ducommun as Ray's best friend who's always proposing bad ideas, and Bruce Dern as a sometimes wild-eyed ex-vet who'd love some action. Dante and crew seem to have a knack for keeping these broad characterizations light enough that you don't mind their superficiality. But the best jokes in this unprepossessing film come from composer Jerry Goldsmith's score; Bruce Dern's presence, for instance, is announced by the theme from Patton, and the boys' first approach to the Klopeks' for a meet-and-greet is buttressed by classic strains from Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns. Kudos to the Klopeks, for their evil ways are ably embodied by Henry Gibson, Courtney Gains, and Brother Theodore. In particular, any suburb that finds it's inhabited by the likes of Brother Theodore is in dire need of new zoning laws. But Carrie Fisher's role as Ray's amiably long-suffering wife is thankless, and she deserves better. --Jim Gay
