The Moody Blues Hall of Fame - Live From the Royal Albert Hall
$7.40

About this product:
With graying baby boomers becoming key underwriters of viewer-supported television, a staid Public Broadcasting System grudgingly acknowledged the existence of rock & roll in the 1990s. The Moody Blues, via their somewhat heavy-handed, 1993 concert video A Night at Red Rocks, were among the first Woodstock generation acts to end up in constant rotation during affiliate pledge drives. The band's PBS follow-up, Hall of Fame, is an improvement overall. Taped at London's Royal Albert Hall early in 2000, the Moodies' more freewheeling performance this time mixes satisfying selections from their catalogue of hits from 1968 to 1972 with a few Top 40 entries released in the late '80s ("I Know You're Out There Somewhere," "Your Wildest Dreams"). The sheer pleasure of watching the core quartet of Ray Thomas, Justin Hayward, John Lodge, and Graeme Edge ease their way into Mellotron masterpieces from Days of Future Passed, as well as the trippy curiosity of "Legend of a Mind" and the dizzying pop mutations of "Ride My See-Saw," is a study in grace. Backed by the once-fictional London Festival Orchestra (credited as a key musical collaborator on Days), the band eschews grandiosity for a pointed but delicate yearning, and whips up its typically stately tone of cosmic romanticism. The frenzied joy of a mixed-age audience brings smiles to the Moodies' faces and a sometimes-unexpected vigor to their vocals--catch Ray Thomas's booming "Welllll!" during every chorus of "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)"--which helps to make this program a treat to watch repeatedly. --Tom Keogh

DVD
The Moody Blues - A Night at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra
$11.75

About this product:
A Night at Red Rocks, taped in Colorado's gorgeous natural amphitheater in 1992, is an ambitious undertaking for these still-stomping rock dinosaurs: the classic Moody Blues lineup playing with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and no safety net. The band rises to the occasion, giving fans a solid if sentimental survey of its long and prosperous career. The performances and the material vary in quality, but the group comes through where it counts. Hits like "The Voice," "The Story in Your Eyes," and "Nights in White Satin" sound great, as does "Question," the Moodys' greatest contribution to rock music.

The Symphony plays well, but the group misses some prime opportunities to use it, adhering to synth parts where an orchestra would have worked nicely (most notably in the rocking "Gemini Dream"). There's no surround mix here, but band leaders Justin Haywood and John Lodge deserve kudos for their able sound mixing. --Michael Mikesell

The Moody Blues: Live at the Isle of Wight, 1970
$10.14

About this product:
In 1970 The Moody Blues were at their creative and commercial peak. After reinventing themselves from their R&B roots to a much more sophisticated sound, between 1967 and 1970 they released five albums, four of which hit the Top 5 in the UK with two of them going to No.1. They enjoyed similar success in the USA where four of the albums hit the Top 20 and the other was just outside. At the end of August 1970, shortly after the release of their album "A Question Of Balance", The Moody Blues took to the stage of the Isle Of Wight Festival in front of an audience estimated at over half a million. 20th Century Masters - The Best of the Moody Blues: The DVD Collection
$1.96

About this product:
Rock survivors the Moody Blues take to the music video form with enough verve and cleverness to offset a few uninspired moments. The five videos here begin with an overlapping narrative between "Your Wildest Dreams" and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere." The former begins with a smartly dressed yet unhappy woman watching the Moodies on television. In short order--via wonderfully staged flashbacks to Swinging London in the '60s--we learn she is a former love (at least for purposes of this story) of the band's lead singer and songwriter, Justin Hayward. Between the two tunes, the lady and Hayward chase one another through collapsed time, sometimes in the present, sometimes past (actors play their younger selves). After such an enterprising production, the pretentious "The Other Side of Life" video is a drag, "Running Out of Love" runs out of energy quickly, and "No More Lies" is barely redeemed by cute animation. --Tom Keogh

DVD
Legend of a Band - The Story of the Moody Blues
$55.55

About this product:
For a band that never aspired to hit singles, the Moody Blues have had a remarkably lengthy career, as evidenced by this glossy 1990 profile. Interview snippets with engagingly chatty band members are interspersed with a dozen of their videos, including those for their hits from the 1981 comeback album Long Distance Voyager: "The Voice" and "Gemini Dream." Singer-guitarist-songwriter Justin Hayward speaks most eloquently and interestingly among the quintet, and for the most part the videos are hilariously cheesy examples of the bad, cheap-looking, early-MTV-days genre. The band lip-syncs the song as a ridiculous story plays out starring the group's members. Some vintage performance footage is unearthed, which should please the group's voraciously loyal fan base, if not those still unconvinced. --Kevin Filipski
