About this product: There's a tantalizing touch of irony in the title My Summer of Love, since this superbly-acted relationship drama reveals much more than love between its curiously fascinating characters. As directed by Polish-born Pawel Pawlikowski (a veteran of British TV documentaries whose previous film was the praiseworthy Last Resort), this unconventional love story is an engrossing exercise in mood and psychology, set in a bleak but invitingly sunlit village in Yorkshire. It's there that lonely, working-class teenager Mona (Nathalie Press) encounters rebellious rich-girl Tamsin (Emily Blunt), and their unlikely friendship grows intimate... but is it really love? Or is Tamsin (who was suspended from boarding school) merely indulging her clever penchant for emotional manipulation during a lazy summer of privilege? Mona's born-again Christian brother (Paddy Considine) factors into the film's languorous mood and complex emotional landscape; this is a film in which love and loss are inseparably intertwined, and motivations remain partially hidden, making it all the more powerful when guarded truths are revealed. In addition to being a compelling study of class distinctions, My Summer of Love includes scenes of anxious menace and some unexpected surprises, packing more into 84 minutes than most films manage in two hours or more. "Photographs and Memories," Have You Heard: Jim Croce Live is a deeply moving remembrance of the singer-songwriter as captured in rare video footage. Thirteen songs Croce performed before live audiences on the BBC's The Old Grey Whistle Test and other '70s television shows include such favorites as "Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)" and "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," though his two best-loved songs, "Time in a Bottle" and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song," are represented by audio recordings that accompany home video footage and a look at a handwritten score. There's no narration apart from a few of Croce's on-air introductions, but the DVD bonus features provide a closer look at Croce the man. Over the main program, Croce's wife and collaborator, Ingrid Croce, and producer Nick Redman recorded a commentary track that compiles Ingrid's thoughts on the songs and her life with Jim, and other rare footage is accompanied by a commentary track by son A.J. About this product: The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1936 and since then has hosted most of the world s greatest conductors and soloists. In 2002, on the occasion of the Annual Concert in Memory of Yitzhak Rabin, the orchestra performed a rarely played piece written by Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney. Standing Stone is a 75-minute symphonic poem based on a Celtic legend written by McCartney himself. There are elements of landscape music from the classic English tradition, passages of high musical drama by way of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, jazz sensibilities, and sentimental melodies straight out of Hollywood. Revealing a lot of McCartney's personality, the epic-musical fantasia Standing Stone shows just how far Sir Paul has come from simple three-chord love songs. The oeuvre was given its world premiere performance in 1997 by the London Symphony Orchestra with Lawrence Foster conducting and it is again Foster who is conducting the Israeli Philharmonics here. As special feature the DVD offers artist biographies in four languages.
About this product: Spend a December evening with Judy Garland! This episode from her CBS - TV show, recorded December 6, 1963 captures the great entertainer and her kids, Liza Minnelli and Lorna and Joe Luft, in a one-hour songfest taking place in the family living room. Garland is mostly a spectator, encouraging the 17-year-old Liza and the younger kids, Lorna (who displays a big voice on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and went on to have her own performing career) and the less-assured Joe (who sings one of the many non- seasonal selections, "Where Is Love," during which an anxious Garland can be glimpsed mouthing the words along with him). But she does sing two of her most memorable film songs -"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Over the Rainbow"- plus "Little Drops of Rain" and she can still kick up her heels. Even one of her flubs produces one of the best moments: she joins Mel Tormé at the piano for his "Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," and when she botches the lyric, he gently chides her, "Close!" Also on hand are Liza's "beau," Tracy Everitt, a dancer on the series, and clean-cut pop star Jack Jones, who sings his Grammy-winning hit "Lollipops and Roses" as well as a nice a cappella version of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" with Tormé.
