DVD
Fish Out of Water
$22.49

About this product:
Coming out of the closet can be challenging and for Ky Dickens, her experience coming out to friends at Vanderbilt University led to the making of FISH OUT OF WATER, a spirited documentary that explores the seven Bible passages notoriously used to condemn homosexuality and justify marriage discrimination.

This genre-bending, intellectually condensed, power-packed analysis of the homophobic religious arguments is a mixture of animation, LGBTQ community interviews and expert analysis from theologians across the country. With the help of a cartoon narrator, animated recollections of Bible passages and witty illustrations, FISH OUT OF WATER makes this polarizing subject accessible and non-threatening. Golden-Globe nominated composer Kaki King (Into the Wild) delivers an original score that flows effortlessly through the film's diverse elements.

Covering over twenty states and capturing the gay community's devastation immediately after the 2008 vote on Proposition 8, FISH OUT OF WATER presents the hyper-relevance of this old issue with concern and creativity.

I'm a bit puzzled here. There is a bit of James Cleveland on here. But it's stuff I already have. Then there are performances of the choirs with him directing. If that's alright with you, I guess it's alright. But, I need more of James.

DVD
Masters of the Country Blues - Rev. Gary Davis and Sonny Terry
$11.00

About this product:
Taken from kinescopes of performances filmed by the Seattle Folk Society, these two black-and-white performances offer unique looks at two blues legends: blind older musicians who spent their lives keeping a musical tradition alive. A stern-looking the Reverend Gary Davis has a finger-picking style that is both spare and stunningly intricate as he plays instrumentals ("Slow Drag," "Candy Man"), spirituals ("I Heard the Angels Singing"), and down and dirty blues songs ("She Wouldn't Say Quit," "Where'd You Get Your Liquor"). Sonny Terry, who spent years partnered with guitarist Brownie McGhee, offers a master class in blues harmonica, accompanying himself on both traditional tunes ("Easy Rider") and originals (the ironically titled "I Got My Eyes on You"). Terry tears it up, alternating wonderfully bent notes with whoops and hollers on "Hootin' the Blues." Though short (an hour), it's an impressive document of a dying musical style. --Marshall Fine

DVD
Novelty Instrumentals of Rev. Gary Davis
$21.40

About this product:
In this lesson Ernie Hawkins teaches three Rev. Davis arrangements that will challenge your fingers. Rev. Gary Davis's tour de force in concert was his "Soldiers March." This is a multi-part instrumental played in the Key of F and C and is a showcase in demonstrating the genius of Rev. Davis's playing and arranging skills. Few country blues guitarists played in the Key of F but Rev. Davis explored this key with religious as well as old pop standards. "Darktown Strutters Ball" is a fascinating arrangement that captures the atmosphere of the 1920s. Rev. Davis use to tell his students that playing with a bottleneck was cheating. Yet his "Whistlin' Blues" uses this technique combined with an Open D6 tuning to create an unusual boogie piano sound. Ernie Hawkins teaches each tune phrase by phrase and carefully shows you the right hand picking as well as the left hand fingerings that were unique to Rev. Davis's approach. You will be able to easily follow the instruction with the tab/music booklet. Also featured are split screen segments where each section is played slowly and you can study the movements of each hand. As a bonus we have included various audio performances of Rev. Davis playing each song.

DVD
The Secret (Extended Edition)
$8.48

About this product:
Not really a movie or documentary, The Secret is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles). What is The Secret, exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe. Put it another way, it’s The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).

Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won’t resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. --Daniel Vancini
