About this product: In Dark Star Safari the wittily observant and endearingly irascible Paul Theroux takes readers the length of Africa by rattletrap bus, dugout canoe, cattle truck, armed convoy, ferry, and train. In the course of his epic and enlightening journey, he endures danger, delay, and dismaying circumstances. Gauging the state of affairs, he talks to Africans, aid workers, missionaries, and tourists. What results is an insightful meditation on the history, politics, and beauty of Africa and its people, and "a vivid portrayal of the secret sweetness, the hidden vitality, and the long-patient hope that lies just beneath the surface" (Rocky Mountain News). In a new postscript, Theroux recounts the dramatic events of a return to Africa to visit Zimbabwe.
About this product: Since its original publication in 1993, The Safari Companion has been the best field guide to observing and understanding the behavior of African mammals. An indispensable tool for naturalists traveling to Africa, this new edition has been revised to acknowledge the enthusiasm to those watching these magnificent animals at zoos and wildlife parks, and on film. The Safari Companion enables readers to recognize and interpret visible behavioral activities, such as courtship rituals, territorial marking, aggression, and care of young. Each account of over 80 species includes a behavioral table in which the unique actions of the hoofed mammals, carnivores, and primates are described for easy reference. In addition, useful maps show the major national boundaries, vegetation zones, and game parks relevant to the guide. The book includes an extensive glossary, as well as tips on wildlife photography, a list of organizations working to protect African wildlife, and advice on where and when to see the animals.

About this product: I'm really into the humorous travel tales and this one is high on my list. Peter Allison followed his dream and wrote about his dream come true in short adventure stories that describe near fatal incidents quite often. His stories make you appreciate the work of a safari guide and their incredible responsibilities to tourists who are often quite stupid in their assumption that wild animals are there to be photographed. Well written and exciting, I loved this book
About this product: The new book by the Author of The Grog Log, Intoxica and Taboo Table. Beach Bum Berry as he is better known is America s leading authority on tropical drinks and polynesian pop-culture. In this all new book, Berry not only offers up tantilizing new drink recipes, but tells stories about some of the most famous figures of their time. The Bum applies the same dogged research to the untold stories of the people behind the drinks. Stories culled from over 100 interviews with those who actually created the mid-century Tiki scene -- people as colorful as the drinks they invented, or served, or simply drank. People like... Leon Lontoc, the Don The Beachcomber's waiter who served Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando by night, and acted in their movies by day...; Henry Riddle, the Malibu Seacomber bartender who fed items about his famous customers to infamous gossip columnist Louella Parsons, till the day Howard Hughes found him out...; and Duke Kamanamoku, whose manager turned him from Olympic champion into reluctant restaurateur.
Young explorers embark on the safari adventure of a lifetime with this fabulous faux-journal, “written” in 1924 by fictional naturalist Rebecca Mayhew. Through her journal entries, youngsters accompany Mayhew as she explores mysterious Africa, from tracking lions in Nairobi to watching white rhinos in Pretoria to marveling at the birth of a baby giraffe in Botswana. Each info-packed page is filled with stunning photographs, colorful maps and illustrations, and fascinating facts about African animals and their environment. At the journey’s end, children can assemble the eight animals from 59 included die-cut pieces and then display them on a gorgeous, removable 3-D diorama.

About this product: This safari will send students on an expedition that will result in hours of good thinking and unbridled enthusiasm. As enthusiasm soars, so do the levels of thinking skills engaged. Students love these deductive logic puzzles so much that they beg to do them, little realizing that they are building important reading comprehension and thinking skills.
Teachers love these puzzles because of their ease of use in multicurricular parallels and their effortlessness in fitting into pullout programs of limited duration. Each motivating puzzle includes an introduction with student-related topics, clues, a grid, and illustrations. The goal in Logic Safari is to hunt down the clues, sort, analyze, and combine them into the correct solution. Each book represents an ever-increasing challenge to students while scenarios remain fresh, evoking renewed eagerness. The size of the grids is an indication of difficulty.
This is the first book in a three-part series of deductive logic puzzles.
