Affluenza
$47.33

About this product:
Affluenza is a fascinating look at one of the greatest social maladies of our time: overconsumption and materialism. Hosted my National Public Radio's Scott Simon, Affluenza explores both the comical and sobering aspects of our consumerism and its enormous impact on our families, communities and the environment. In response to this materialistic lifestyle, many people are opting out of the consumer culture. Some are turning to one of the fastest growing trends in our country, voluntary simplicity, which is just one of the many "cures" that are explored in Affluenza.

A New Leaf (Special Home Video Version)
$40.45

About this product:
[Note: some music has been changed for the home video version of this title.] This widely-admired film prompts many questions. Would the original 3-hour version have been better, with its unsavory murders? Or has the film benefited from the studio's pruning of Elaine "Ishtar" May's artistic liberties? Can a life devoted entirely to leisure be satisfying? Or must there be meaningful purpose behind one's existence? Are there really members of the upper crust who need to be vacuumed daily? Is Henrietta in fact only a pretend simpleton?

DVD
The Bells of St. Mary's
$7.90

About this product:
The Bells of St. Mary's works much better for its battle of wills between a parish priest and a head nun than the dopey musical interludes that pepper it, but Bells is still a winning, emotionally satisfying film. This sequel to Going My Way has Father O'Malley (Bing Crosby) taking over the St. Mary's parochial school and finding himself at loggerheads with Sister Benedict (Ingrid Bergman, looking gorgeous even in a habit). There's a wonderful balance to all of this: O'Malley takes a more worldly approach to administration and is wrong just as many times as the nun is when she insists on a more biblical approach. About four subplots suffuse the film, including the story of a young charge from the wrong side of the tracks, and the deteriorating state of St. Mary's in the shadow of a brand-new building (the owner is played by the avuncular Henry Travers). A dear film. --Keith Simanton
