About this product: Kid safety is an important, yet often difficult topic of discussion between parents and children. The Safe Side's "Safe Side Super-Chick" is a decidedly zany host who successfully combines slapstick humor with serious, practical safety tips for kids. "Safe Side Super-Chick" breaks the population down into three quickly discernable categories: "Safe Side Adults" that kids know well and can always trust to keep them safe, "Don't Knows" like the mail carrier or the lady at the park and "Sorta Knows" like a coach or a schoolmate's parent. As "Safe Side Super-Chick" interacts with "Don't Knows" and "Sorta Knows", she offers seven specific safety tips to keep kids safe and, with the help of real kids, details simple, concrete actions and phrases that empower kids in a variety of potentially dangerous situations. Best of all, the presentation is never scary, but always extremely funny--that means that kids ages 2 to 10 will actually enjoy learning about safety. Kudos to Julie Clark (creator of Baby Einstein) and John Walsh (host of America's Most Wanted) for creating a safety video that's highly entertaining, informative, and practical. --Tami Horiuchi
About this product: I'm usually not very interested in completely instrumental soundtracks. However, after seeing MIRRORMASK I was so captivated weeks later that I still found myself hearing some of the tunes from the movie in my head. So I purchased the soundtrack. I haven't regretted. Like many of the visual elements in the film are to the eye, the music is stunning and full of aural power. My favorite piece on the album is track #19, "Monkeybirds". I like putting the soundtrack into the cd player or the computer as I write. It works as excellent stimulating mood music to get the creative juices flowing. The music is a bit quirky, but not so much so that a casual listener still won't enjoy it.
About this product: "Oh, the bats (squeak, squeak) sing a squeaky song, and they sing (squeak, squeak) nearly all night long, catching bugs (squeak, squeak) till the break of dawn, then the bats (squeak, squeak) fly away." In Sue Schnitzer's musical world, Halloween is infinitely more fun than scary. A creaking-door sound introduces this folksy, downright perky CD of original or newly arranged children's songs such as "Your Bones" ("your thigh bone's connected to your knee bone," etc.) and a hauntingly beautiful version of "Ghost of John," with deep, mournful cello and flute. First graders from Crest View Elementary School in Boulder sing, scream, or giggle along with these festive songs about pumpkins, skeletons, bats, witches, monsters, and ghosts. Sue Schnitzer sings and plays guitar, but a bass, fiddle, keyboard, harmonica, flute, drums, and a cello join in as well. Pleasantly eerie tunes like "All Skin and Bones" are punctuated by long "ooooohs" and plenty of repetition that make it fun for kids to sing along even without knowing all the lyrics. The CD ends with a minute's worth of very silly Halloween riddles such as "Why did Dracula have no friends? Because he's a pain in the neck." (Maniacal giggles follow.) A few more Halloween jokes speckle the liner notes, along with some ideas for Halloween crafts. Young ghouls and boys will certainly revel in this wonderfully eclectic trick-or-treat bag of Halloween songs. Boo! (Ages 4 to 7) --Karin Snelson
About this product: Carlos and Phoebe can't decide if spiders are cool or creepy. Then, the kids are magically transported into a drive-in movie about a giant praying mantis. In the process, they learn many fascinating facts about different kinds of spiders, including trap-door spiders and web-spinning spiders. They gain a new respect for nature's best trappers. About this product: Spinning a yarn that begins where the 30-year-old original concluded, Charlotte's Web 2: Wilbur's Great Adventure returns to Zuckerman's farm for more endearing pig tales. Faint-hearted Wilbur preserves his dear friend Charlotte's memory by befriending the lone black sheep of the farm. When a trip to the county fair separates the comrades, Wilbur musters his courage to find his frightened woolly pal. Along the way, a sticky encounter with a beehive leaves Wonder Pig looking more like Feral Pig... and suddenly Wilbur is to blame for a hungry fox's doings. Charlotte's three sprightly daughters save the day, despite amateur weaving abilities. Preserving the quiet pace and beautiful watercolor look of the original, this animated 75-minute show should appeal to new fans. But adults who fondly recall many bittersweet moments shared by Charlotte and Wilbur, and timeless songs like "Mother Earth and Father Time," might feel slightly cheated. (Ages 3 and older) --Liane Thomas
About this product: This animated feature based on the popular E.B. White book for children--about the special relationships between Wilbur the pig, Charlotte the spider, and Templeton the rat--is a straight adaptation from the page, with songs added. Endearing, heartbreaking, and ultimately wise, it may not please all of those with a strong attachment to the book, but it works all the same. --Tom Keogh
About this product: As a pleasant dose of holiday cheer, The Holiday is a lovable love story with all the Christmas trimmings. In the capable hands of writer-director Nancy Meyers (making her first romantic comedy since Something's Gotta Give), it all begins when two successful yet unhappy women connect through a home-swapping website, and decide to trade houses for the Christmas holiday in a mutual effort to forget their man troubles. Iris (Kate Winslet) is a London-based journalist who lives in a picture-postcard cottage in Surrey, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) owns a movie-trailer production company (leading her to cutely imagine most of her life as a "coming attraction") and lives in a posh mansion in Beverly Hills. Iris is heartbroken from unrequited love with a cad of a colleague (Rufus Sewell), and Amanda has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend (Edward Burns), so their home-swapping offers mutual downtime to reassess their love lives. This being a Nancy Meyers movie (where everything is fabulously decorated and romantic wish-fulfillment is virtually guaranteed), Amanda hooks up with Iris's charming brother Graham (Jude Law), and Iris is unexpectedly smitten with Miles (Jack Black), a super-nice film composer on the downside of a failing relationship. --Jeff Shannon
