BOOK
Gesture: Second Language Acquistion and Classroom Research (Esl and Applied Linguistics Professional)
McCafferty: Sta
$126.80

About this product:
This book demonstrates the vital connection between language and gesture, and why it is critical for research on second language acquisition to take into account the full spectrum of communicative phenomena. The study of gesture in applied linguistics is just beginning to come of age. This edited volume, the first of its kind, covers a broad range of concerns that are central to the field of SLA. The chapters focus on a variety of second-language contexts, including adult classroom and naturalistic learners, and represent learners from a variety of language and cultural backgrounds. Gesture: Second Language Acquisition and Classroom Research is organized in five sections: Part I, Gesture and its L2 Applications, provides both an overview of gesture studies and a review of the L2 gesture research. Part II, Gesture and Making Meaning in the L2, offers three studies that all take an explicitly sociocultural view of the role of gesture in SLA. Part III, Gesture and Communication in the L2, focuses on the use and comprehension of gesture as an aspect of communication. Part IV, Gesture and Linguistic Structure in the L2, addresses the relationship between gesture and the acquisition of linguistic features, and how gesture relates to proficiency. Part V, Gesture and the L2 Classroom, considers teachers' gestures, students' gestures, and how students' interpret teachers' gestures. Although there is a large body of research on gesture across a number of disciplines including anthropology, communications, psychology, sociology, and child development, to date there has been comparatively little investigation of gesture within applied linguistics. This volume provides readers unfamiliar with L2 gesture studies with a powerful new lens with which to view many aspects of language in use, language learning, and language teaching.

BOOK
Form-Meaning Connections in Second Language Acquisition (Second Language Acquistion Research Theoretical and Methodological Issues)
$54.99

About this product:
Form-Meaning Connections in Second Language Acquisition is an interdisciplinary and timely edited book of essays and empirical studies, most of which are based on the papers presented at the Form and Meaning Conference held in Chicago in 2002. The goal of the conference and now of the book is to present linguistic and cognitive approaches to second language acquisition, attempting to integrate external and internal issues in interlanguage development, while outlining directions for future research. The editors address questions, such as: What is the nature and sequence of the form-meaning mapping process? How are these connections made? How are these connections used to construct grammars and lexicons? And, how can conditions and external factors be manipulated to improve the chances of making these form-meaning connections?

Contributors to this volume include such second language acquisition scholars as Susan Gass, Nick Ellis, Kathleen Bardovi-Harlig, Catherine Doughty, and Diane Larsen-Freeman. They address these form-meaning issues from a variety of settings and from multiple perspectives.

Researchers and graduate students in applied linguistics, cognitive psychology, linguistics, and language pedagogy will find this volume to be an important resource.

BOOK
Business Planning for Mergers and Acquistions
Samuel C., Jr. Thompson
$25.00

About this product:
This law book is a more comprehensive, practical approach to the subject of mergers and acquisitions than the highly theoretical or confined approaches taken in previous works. Principally designed for law school students, Business Planning for Mergers and Acquisitions presents a thorough treatment of the merger and acquisition process from the perspective of a practicing attorney. It will also be helpful to attorneys and investment bankers practicing in the merger and acqusition area, as well in business school courses dealing with mergers and acquisitions.

The text considers numerous topics arising in the business of mergers and acquisitions, including corporate, securities, antitrust, pre-merger notification, federal income taxatation, accounting, and valuation. Thompson integrates the consideration of these topics while focusing on various types of merger and acquisition transactions.

A significant number of problems are used to illustrate the many varied and interrelated principles, and each chapter begins with a problem designed to present a real life setting for an examination of the topics covered in that chapter. The approach is intended to help the law student or other reader gain both a practical and theoretical understanding of many of the legal problems a business attorney will likely encounter in practice. The deals presented offer some of the most challenging and intellectually reewarding work for attorneys.

To better illustrate many of the transactional principles, reference is made throughout the book to the 1989 acqusition by Time, Inc. of Warner Communications, Inc. Business Planning for Mergers and Acqusitions offers a thorough and engaging course for law students who may plan to practice in business law.

A teacher's manual and a 2003 supplement are also available.

BOOK
Operations in English: 55 Natural and Logical Sequences for Lanuage Acquistion
Gayle Nelson
$7.50

About this product:
Operations in English
55 Natural and Logical Sequences for Language Acquisition
by: Gayle Nelson and Thomas Winters
Level: Beginner to advanced intermediate, Primary – Adult

An operation is a pair work activity in which students communicate naturally to accomplish a set task step by step. The students try to use language accurately. One gives instructions very clearly; the other follows them exactly. If the first student makes a mistake, the result is usually funny as well as instructive. The activity is effective both in building conversation skills and as a game.

What are the tasks? The 55 operations include classroom activities (using a calculator or making a paper airplane), household activities (setting a table or pounding a nail), games and exercises (hopping on one leg or playing dice), food and recipes (making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or pudding), communication (mailing a letter or using a fax machine), and such miscellaneous activities as writing a check or using an automatic teller or vending machine. After the initial pair work, the authors suggest a variety of follow-up activities, such as · having the students describe the sequence (in the first, second, or third person using whatever tenses they are working on) · creating new operations · writing mini dramas · doing related out-of-class research.

· Inexperienced teachers will appreciate the easy way each activity is presented and the simple explanation of what operations are and why and how to use them.

· More experienced teachers will find that these operations are quite compatible with a wide variety of teaching approaches like James Asher's Total Physical Response, the Silent Way, or the Natural Approach.
