About this product: First a confession...I didn't use this book to run a half-marathon! I needed to strengthen my running for an olympic distance triathlon. The run is 10K. OK, shorter than a half-marathon, but I figured that after the swim and bike sections I would need to be strong for the run. Following the program from this book really helped, especially the hill work.
This book is well written and easy to follow. It begins with several chapters that discuss the basics such as buying a pair of running shoes (Very, very helpful and very important!), how to train and how to avoid/minimise injuries. It then offers six different training programs from beginner to competitive runner. The last section of the book gives a chapter to go along with that weeks training program. Very easy to follow, as I mentioned before.
One of the things I really like about the book is that it is not technical in any of its explanations. It is clear and concise. (Did I mention easy to follow?) An easy read, if you like?
I would recommend this book to anyone looking to complete a half-marathon. I have now signed up for the distance and will be using one of the programs.
Over 20 million Americans run recreationally, but doing it right is more than a matter of buying an expensive pair of shoes and heading for the track. Building on the popularity of The Beginning Runner’s Handbook, this practical, easy-to-use guide provides a step-by-step program for running a half or full marathon for the first time. It shows readers how to get motivated and set realistic goals, choose the proper shoes, eat right, build strength and endurance, and avoid sore muscles and injury. The book includes tips from elite runners on such subjects as staying motivated when the weather is extreme, running technique, running with a dog, and running partners. Finally, the book describes strategies for the race, what to expect on race day, and the psychological effects of finishing a half or full marathon. As this study shows, the popularity of the marathon and half marathon has increased dramatically in recent years. Growing numbers of people have become aware of the life-changing experiences and the health benefits that result from training for, and competing in, a 13.1 - or 26.2 - mile race. Notwithstanding this, these events are extremely testing endurance races and entrants need to be properly informed so that they can train and prepare in an appropriate way. This handbook discusses everything you need to know, including choosing the right clothes and running shoes, the importance of stretching and core stability, and even post-race nutrition and hydration.
