*Update: The above clock was updated to reflect the recent news of the rapture taking place at 6 PM local time. Just in case we are in the midst of some intangible divine judgement, the clock has been changed to count forward, showing how far in we are. Good luck
A few months ago I happened on a radio station called Family Radio and a program called Open Forum. This is a call-in program in which various people pose questions about the Bible to the host and Bible scholar, Harold Camping. I have been an occasional listener ever since.
What makes Harold Camping interesting is that he is convinced (or at least he does a good job acting convinced) that the judgment day will begin on May 21, 2011 and after five months the world will be completely obliterated on October 21, 2011.
Camping exhorts his listeners to abandon their churches, which he believes are now controlled by Satan, and instead spend their time begging and pleading God for mercy on judgment day. The point being that beginning May 21, 2011 five months of great upheaval and calamity will grip the world. People will suffer and die of injuries and starvation. A number of true believers will be selected to be transported to heaven (rapture) and the rest will be left behind to be completely destroyed as the universe implodes into nothingness.
A tall tale, to say the least, but that's Camping's interpretation of the Bible and I'm sure he has many followers. So in honor of the judgment day and the end of the world I have placed a countdown clock at top of this post, based on my JavaScript Countdown tool, displaying the remaining time until the judgment day, May 21, 2011 12:00 AM UTC.
Lest you think I'm ridiculing the man or his belief, I must admit that I have no evidence refuting his claim. Of course the lack of a contrary evidence, does not validate the original claim. It only gives the claim a measure of plausibility, in this case a very miniscule amount. Safe to say that I'm not a follower, I'm not even religious. But I am following this case to its conclusion because I wonder what type of explanation the followers will be receiving on May 22, 2011.

I have studied Harold's books for around 20 years now. While I don't agree with every single thing he says I do see enough there to feel he is on to something and he presents very good data most of the time. I have studied end time data from 5 others also and their material is a joke compared to the amount of Biblical data in Harold's material and the way he backs it up with the Bible. I am currently studying the May 21, 2011 data to see if I agree. I can already see some things Biblically are fitting perfectly with that date. I still have much work to do and it is very time consuming to do the research and put the pieces together so I don't make a final decision till I'm done. Most people comment on what Harold says without having an open mind and studying carefully his material. I think this is sad. He provides a lot of Biblical data to back up his conclusion. I try to have an open mind till I can prove Biblically for myself if I see the data is true or not.

This is exactly the same way I have approached May 21, 2011. After quite some time studying and debating in every forum I could find, the only somewhat credible argument presented was Matt 24:36, Mark 13:32, and Acts 1:7. With a few exceptions, the remainder of the bible was simply ignored. Debating the issue has certainly help to solidify the claim for me.

The world (but not the universe) can end because of earthquake, tsunami, meteor strike, nuclear war, supernova, and some other natural or man made disaster. These are however just local ends that have nothing to do with The Day of judgment. End will also not happen on any arbitrary date like December 2012. The end of the universe is an entirely different phenomenon that is built into the laws of the universe by the creator. The contraction of the universe with reversal of time and gravity will commence the beginning of the end which will last for thousands and possibly millions of years. We will be removed from the regressing effects of reversed time as we come back alive in our own time. We will the be taken across many dimensions to beyond this universe. A beautiful natural mechanism that is based on the laws of physics will cause all that to happen. This real end has nothing to do with wishful thinking and predictions of priests or shamans.

Mkhan,
Your post is an excellent example of the typical religious unfalsifiable drivel past along as fact. Similar to legitimate scientific techniques, we must base our conclusions(from the bible) on evidence and proof.

I could not agree more, our conclusions must be solidified.

I have also found Harold Camping on the night-time family radio. He does sound convincing, and I have recently googled him and found he also had an end-of-the-world prediction for September 1994. So, of course I am now skeptical. I know that he would say that the book of Daniel is now open for "those with ears to hear", and I am able to believe that, but also hesitant. Life has to be lived in the holy way of our Lord, so no matter what, we shall be saved.

I seriously doubt Mr Camping`s prediction.I`m not looking forward to Judgment Day...I`m looking forward to what kind of an excuse/explanation these guys will have!!! I bet the explanation why Judgment Day didn`t take place,is already "ready" to be submitted to the world.I feel sad for the people who actually believe this and therefore sacrifice many things in order to be "ready".Maybe it`s just a publicity stunt or a way to make some quick bucks.Remember: Mr Camping made a similar prediction in the past..and what happened? NOTHING! Please people, think for yourself and stop being suckers or brainwashed.Regards from South Africa!

Daniel 12:
8 And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?
9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

What I have learned is that we shouldn't trust in man's information. Harold Camping says it himself, instead of us doubting the BIBLE we should trust in the BIble and read it, praying to God for spiritual understanding. God is still saving those who are begging him and maybe hemight save you too! There are those who will simply mock God and what has been said; however, the Word of God is true. Revelation 1v3 says, "The one who reads the words of God's message is happy. And the people who hear this message and do what is written in it are happy. The timeis near when all of this will happen."

Churches never mention these verses that state the believers will know more than the unbeliervers like when christ will return, ask your minister what these verses mean! I am sure that he will not have an answer.
1 Thessalonians 5:
4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

I was extremely skeptical of the story. But one day, I was sitting around with nothing really to do, and found myself reading the tract that I got from a truck stop. Well, I researched the citations and found them ALL to be rock solid. If all is a huge coincidence, then miracles happen. Calculators don't lie. I suggest you check the numbers he offers. It is beyond proof positive, to any who take the time.

It is a shame that we have been hit so often by those that cry wolf, that we will not believe even when it is a real warning. Maybe this is God's joke on the unsaved. What would it take for anyone to believe that this time is different??
Comment by Fred — January 22, 2011 @ 2:15 pm
There are two separate things he is mentioning. One is his calculation to May 21st, 2011. Which is 7000 years from the time of noah and the flood. Secondly is his interpretation of an apostate church and what and when it is that God will judge it. Why is the church more apostate now than it was the time of and before Martin Luther...etc ? Secondly I ask if the church is the bride of Christ then why would God divorce it from 1988 on? Is divorce not a sin?

and also if one verse in the bible is not true then none of it is true, so if any of us "Know" the day, the bible is proved wrong and untrue so who cares go on with life and God doesnt exist. Ill be praying for this false prophet and all who are suckered into what he has to say. The bible also talks about an abundance of false prophets in the end times such as this guy. He made similar statements in the past that did not come true, so why would you believe him now? believe God's word that says ONLY the father will know the day, not this MAN.

I find it interesting that those who follow brother Camping, do so out of documented reason and anylysis. Those who don't are largely ignorant of the whole subject matter. For example, the "no man knows but the Father" is PART of that scripture which brother Camping has dealt with/discussed innumerable times; why not read the REST of that scripture and see what it says for YOURSELF. Also when brother Camping wrote "1994?" (the question mark was actually part of the title), he definitively stated that (a) 1994 was merely a POSSIBILITY and (b) STATED IN THAT PUBLICATION THAT 2011 WAS A POSSIBILITY AS WELL.
Far better to just say that you hate brother Camping, his followers, etc. on principle rather than trying to justify it through an ignorant/lazy "analysis" of his work.
Comment by Leon — February 20, 2011 @ 2:00 pm
God gave us some very good clues to the end of time.
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Mark 13: 28,29
This was a wonderful sign that God gave us. One of the first big pointing signs that we are nearing the end.
God tells us in I Thessalonians 5:4-6
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
The wicked/unsaved have a vested interest in their continued ignorance and wickedness, but as for the saved the wisdom and insight is there if you but seek it.
Comment by Leon — February 20, 2011 @ 2:15 pm
Leon I have read the rest of the scripture and I still understand it as saying that no man knows the day or the hour. Says so right here in Matthew 24:42-44.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord cometh.43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken through.44 Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

My savior said that there is no way for you or anyone else to know when He is coming back so I believe Him and not you!
Mark 13:32-33: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is."
Matthew 24:36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only."
I am looking forward to posting here again on May 22, 2011 when the rapture doesn't happen!

I dont know wheter this Harold Camping's prediction is true but I checked his calculations and they we're quite accurate I have to say. And also, I'm confused by the verse: " But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only." So which one is right and wrong here? Well, whatever the case is, I'll just repent and hoped May 21st would happen, you know? Just to be on the safe side..

Hey there? thanks for starting the conversation, I want to mention that Mr Comping did say that 1994 was likely the day of Jesus coming( again he said that it was the likely day but he didn't confirm that day to be the end as he is now. and in his book 1994 he did mention 2011 as the possibility at the time. everyone can read the book it is there. again as God is opening many Bible's propheseeto all true Bible readers we can now know more than any theologian has ever know in the past not because we're smarter or anything but because this is the time that God want these things to be known. take your Bible and read it, check any and everything that is said on familyradio for yourself. i'm going to end this comment by saying that this May 21, 2011 judgement day will never be believed by everyone who hears it or sees it somewhere because there are those who fight God in everyway possible but this day will put an end to this behaviors. thanks
Comment by Shaan — March 18, 2011 @ 7:37 pm
We not only can know the time of Christ's return, we absolutely must know. Think of the flood of Noah's day. He certainly did not just happen to enter the ark at the appropriate time.
Take a close look at the following verses:
- What do we watch for?
“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” Matt 24:42
“But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.” Matt 24:43
- The lord of what servant shall come in a day and hour he is not aware of?
“But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;” Matt 24:48
“The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matt 24:50-51
- Who made the cry? What is meant by “go ye out to meet him”?
“And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.” Matt 25:6
“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” Matt 25:13
Notice the reference to TIME and notice the relationship of TIME and WATCHING. It is the watchmen who make the cry. The watchman have left the church(go ye out to meet him).
“Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. “ Rev 3:3
“Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. “ Luke 12:37
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. “ John 10:10

OK, this is not going to happen. I will give you the short version. 1st there has to be a world leader to emerge he must be a Jew with a Syrian background he must offer a 7 year peace treaty that falls apart in 3 1/2 years he will declare himself as the messiah Isreal will by this time have rebuilt the temple he will ride into the temple on a pig this is known as the abomination of desolation at this point the rabbi's will realize he is not the massiah and kill him with a fatal wound to the head from the time he rides in on the pig it will be 1290 days from then until judgement day. If you do not believe me maybe you will on MAY 22, 11

I caught some of your discussions on May 21st, my question is...... Does it matter at all? If you are ready for Christ (christian), What is so important about the date?; if God controls everything, and He does, Do you think that our endeavors or expectations for a date, does not take away for the purpose of follow Jesus teachings and commandments? If it is tomorrow, the Holy Spirit will fulfill the work He is here to do. I do not need another Tower of Babel(man efforts to reach God) to know that He is in control and that I should rely on Him and trust that whatever will happen will work for the good to those who follow and do His will.

I would like to tell you about a dream I had about seven years ago. I was living in Arkansas off University Avenue in Little Rock. This dream has stuck with me ever since. I did not try to put any dates or time with the dream because at the time it was only a dream. I do not try to claim to be a profit nor am I a preacher. I do claim to be a believer in the Holy Bible and I believe in what the word says. I've told a few people about my dream years ago along with my wife.
Before I tell you the details of the dream I have to fill you in on some information about myself. I had been working at a large retail company in Little Rock for ten years before I received a call for a job in California. Why California you ask? Well, my wife is originally from Cali and she wanted to move back home, soooo, the things we do for the ones we love right? Well after getting the job in Cali I packed up the family and headed west. After a week in Cali my father in-law told me about Mr. Camping and how he was predicting Jesus would return and judgment day would be on May 21, 2011. We both laughed and referred to what the bible says about knowing the day and the hour. “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." Matthew 24:36. This has not changed because God's word never changes.
I believe Mr. Camping is on to something when it comes to the 21st of May 2011. I just don't think he has it completely right as to the day Jesus will return and rapture the believers from earth. My personnel belief is that the Holy Spirit will leave and the earth will begin to have major pains. “For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.” 2 Thessalonians 2:7.Again, this is just my personal belief. I am sharing this information with you because of the events that took place in my dream. My objective is to give a clear understanding of the details before I get into it. Also, I am by no means trying to persuade anyone to believe what I am saying. I just feel very strong about sharing my dream only because my dream is playing out right in front of my eyes.
†
The Dream
I was traveling from Little Rock towards North Little Rock / Sherwood on I30 to I40. As I approached these very large Churches on the left side all the traffic came to a complete stop. The traffic was backed up to the point people started to get out of their vehicles. I got out myself but on the passenger side because I was not driving. After I got out I noticed how long my hair was. I said to myself, “wow look how long my hair is”. I then turned and looked up and noticed the sky was covered with clouds. As I was looking at the clouds I saw what looked like a single rain drop hitting the clouds. Right then I said “it is time”. I thought about my wife and kids being in California with her parents, and that they were all together.
End
†
As I said before, I told a few people about my dream and thought nothing else about it. Now that we are in California I cannot stop thinking about my dream. The reason is on May 21, 2011 I will be in Little Rock for my sister’s graduation. My wife and kids will be in California with her parents. My sisters are graduating from ULAR which is in Little Rock. After the graduation our ride home will be on I30 to I40 in front of the big churches on the freeway. WoW! Really? How often do dreams line up like this? I've had dreams before that came true, so I don't just over look them. I still do not believe this day will be judgment day, but I do believe something will happen. My flesh doesn't want anything to happen but my spirit does. For me to have this dream right at seven years ago and Mr. Camping to say what he is saying for the same day is mind boggling. It might be possible Mr. Camping doesn't think Jesus will return that day, but unless you say something that dramatic people will not listen.

(Mark 13.32-37; Luke 17.26-30,34-36)
36No one knows the day or hour. The angels in heaven don't know, and the Son himself doesn't know. [g] Only the Father knows. 37When the Son of Man appears, things will be just as they were when Noah lived. 38People were eating, drinking, and getting married right up to the day that the flood came and Noah went into the big boat. 39They didn't know anything was happening until the flood came and swept them all away. That is how it will be when the Son of Man appears. 40Two men will be in the same field, but only one will be taken. The other will be left. 41Two women will be together grinding grain, but only one will be taken. The other will be left. 42So be on your guard! You don't know when your Lord will come. 43Homeowners never know when a thief is coming, and they are always on guard to keep one from breaking in. 44Always be ready! You don't know when the Son of Man will come.

I will be honest. I am NOT a believer in the May 21st hype. I love math and have looked over his explanation of the theory behind this and I can see where some things would make people believe in this. BUT let’s remember this is all about our belief in Christ and his word and as I posted above his word states that NO ON KNOWS when he will return. Unless Mr. Camping or his followers have decided Jesus was kidding or flat out lying to us. The second thing that I think of when I read this is
Mark Ch 24:23-28
Someone may say, "Here is the Messiah!" or "There he is!" But don't believe it. 24False messiahs and false prophets will come and work great miracles and signs. They will even try to fool God's chosen ones. 25But I have warned you ahead of time. 26If you are told that the Messiah is out in the desert, don't go there! And if you are told that he is in some secret place, don't believe it! 27The coming of the Son of Man will be like lightning that can be seen from east to west. 28Where there is a corpse, there will always be buzzards.
I am not saying that he is a False Prophet, but it seems very close. I hear he is telling people to STOP going to church. That goes against
Deuteronomy 31:11-13
11 when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children, who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
Take what you want from this, if nothing else it has stirred an interest in God, but at the same time Christians will suffer more verbal assaults from people who saw the vehicles and advertising for May 21st. I guess I can look forward to the fact that it won’t start until the 22nd… lol..
One more comment for the TRUE believers in the May 21st Theory.. I am willing to receive any money, cars or property that you will get rid of prior to the Judgment day. Please feel free to contact me and send me everything. I will not collect until the 22nd I promise…..

Harold Camping is a sad case. Sadly he has pursued through his life a belief that a person should study the Bible on his own without view to other references or writers. Being an engineer in training he has a natural comfort with numbers and math and I am not surprised that this is what results. 20 years ago I admired his convictions and basic Reformed beliefs, but over the years he has become more and more heretical, believing his own interpretation of the Bible as true and all others false. When he pronounced an end to the "Church Age" and called for all Christian churches to disband and for Christians to leave their churches, it was apparent that he had fallen of the edge. Reformed leaders confronted him with his errors and urged that the repent from his teachings. He never responded to any of their contacts. So, like every other false prophet that has predicted the end of the world, he will make the announcement that his theology is not wrong but the calculations were in error and eventually announce some other date, safely distant.

Harold Camping and those who espouse his teaching are utilizing the most erroneous method of Bible study known as allegorical interpretation. I have studied their precepts and they consistently take verses out of their context and contextualize them with other verses that are in no way relevant. This methodology enables them to make to make scripture support any hypothesis they care to put forward. There is a renowned Muslim cleric who does the same thing with Bible scipturees to build a case for Islam being the only true religion, like Camping he is very convincing although completely wrong! Camping is certainly filling a role in God's plan for the end of the age and one clearly defined by scripture. He is yet one more of a long list of false prophets whose errant teaching will lead many astray. As a pastor and Christian I pray for him and those who fall prey to his heresies.

In 1 Thesselonians 5:2-9 He tells of 2 groups of people; those who know when He is returning and are saved, and those caught as by a thief in the night and are destroyed. John 10:10 tells us...the thief comes not, but to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. Seek ye the Lord while He may be found. May God have mercy on you!

God is not lying or brainwashing or doing anything but warning of His return and judgment, just as He said He would. Matthew 3:2- Repent. For the kingdom of heaven is at hand...May God have mercy on us.

Harold Camping is a confused crackpot. No one knows when Christ will return, no matter how good his math is God's is better~~

The bible tells us that no man knows the day or hour. Instead of freaking out about when the end will come, Jesus warned us in Matthew 24 to keep watch and be ready. We must become both physically and spiritually prepared for the things to come. How? http://www.endtimesolutions.com.

The Bible reads like today’s news
1Co 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
1Co 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
Isa 34:1 Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it.
Isa 34:2 For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter.
Isa 34:3 Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood.
Jer 25:31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD.
Jer 25:32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth

The True God would do no such thing!

And we should be living our life's to the fullest each and every day. i hear about people quitting there jobs because of this. No offense Harold. Well yes i do mean ALOT OF OFFENSE HAROLD. At 12:00AM May 22 ill be laughing at all the people who wasted there jobs and life's with this.

Is anyone surprised that it isn't really judgement day?
Comment by binomial pricing option model — May 21, 2011 @ 7:33 pm
Not much of a surprise really, i was just wondering what got into this "scholar" to be so ludicrous as to dare make a date for the end of the world.
He should stop searching for fame and glory and use the bible for building up himself and other people into doing positive things.
These kind of men make other people not reach the light of the scriptures due to their unscriptural assumptions of things that not even the Lord Jesus Christ knew about.
Whoever thought of this ridiculous claim needs to stop bersmiching the name of god and his son, and really rethink of what he is trying to do with his "research" of the bible.

Jesus said no man knows the day or hour he will come.
He will come like a thief in the night.
Everytime someone set a day or time he is wrong even if he is a prophet.
Comment by Sense — May 22, 2011 @ 12:35 am
Well, He was wrong in the 80's and wrong now.... Let's see how many idiots follow him next time he predicts the end of the world.............

The second thing that I think of when I read this isMark Ch 24:23-28Someone may say, "Here is the Messiah!" or "There he is!" But don't believe it. 28Where there is a corpse, there will always be buzzards.I am not saying that he is a False Prophet, but it seems very close. I hear he is telling people to STOP going to church. That goes againstDeuteronomy 31:11-1311 when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the LORD your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children, who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”Take what you want from this, if nothing else it has stirred an interest in God, but at the same time Christians will suffer more verbal assaults from people who saw the vehicles and advertising for May 21st. I guess I can look forward to the fact that it won’t start until the 22nd… lol..One more comment for the TRUE believers in the May 21st Theory.. I am willing to receive any money, cars or property that you will get rid of prior to the Judgment day. Please feel free to contact me and send me everything. I will not collect until the 22nd I promise…..
+1
